My almost 3 y/o DS has spiked 3 very high fevers over the past year. The latest was this morning. He woke up feeling fine then fell asleep on the couch which is unusual for him. I felt him and he was very warm. I took his temp. and it was 103.4. I gave him some fluid and left him alone. I don't like to stop fevers because I think they serve a purpose.

His fever broke around noon and he is now back to normal. He acts as though he was never sick.

The last time he did this he had some loose stools with the fever and it lasted off and on for about 36 hours. The highest that time was almost 104.

Before that time it lasted for a full morning and maxed out at 103.7 with no other symptoms.

I don't understand what would cause him to spike fevers with virtually no other symptoms.

I keep hoping it is the beginning of chicken pox but no such luck.

Any ideas???

My dd has spiked high fevers for 24-36 hours several times and then had no symptoms. I contribute that to fighting off the infection with the fever doing what it is supposed to do. Is there any specific reason why you are worried?

My DD has gotten quite a few fevers over her 2 years. Someo of them were just fevers alone, others were accompanies by a short illness. She never gets sick for more than a day or two, but it is ALWAYS accompanied by a super high fever. 105 at one point.

I'm not particularly worried just curious as to what is happening in his body. I just assume it is his body defending itself by spiking these fevers to kill off any pathogens. I just don't know to many other kids IRL that do what he does. He is hardly ever sick even when those around him are. Just these random fevers.

That's what dd did for most illnesses until around 3 or 3.5

My kids are all born with kidney reflux. They've all spiked fevers and when their fevers go up, I check their urine and they always have kidney infections. Sometimes, their fevers go away on their own (within 3 or 4 hours). Oftentimes, I have to give them Silver Shield for it.

I've always heard that when they get very high fevers, it's often the kidneys. Before I knew that my children had problems w/their kidneys, they would often get high, unexplained fevers. Now that I know what they're from, it makes sense.

If your child gets high, unexplained fevers that stick around, get their urine checked out pronto. Kidney infections can go bad very quickly.

So should I wait until the next time he spikes a fever to get his urine checked? Or take him in anyway even if not feverish? This of course worries me. Are there other symptoms with kidney infections in kids? Wouldn't there be some pain? The one time I had a kidney infection I was miserable and throwing up and in pain.

Kidney infection is by no means my first thought with a fever. First- as a *rule* (not 100% of course...) bacterial infections usually have a high and fairly stable fever. Viruses tend to have a fever that goes up and down.

My son's the opposite. He gets sick a lot (this fall seems better, yay!!!!!) but seriously, the last two fall/winters have been illness after illness after illness, sometimes two at once (separate sets of symptoms peaking at different times, that seem clearly unrelated), but he never seems to run much of a fever, at least it's never seemed excessive with the hand on the forehead approach. There's probably something slightly different in how your son deals with illness vs how mine does, but I'd focus on the fact that this is working well for him. It seems like his body is coping well, yes? It sounds actually like he fights off illness very fast--seems like the high fever could be part of that. I guess no concrete answers, but it sounds like a good thing to know about what's working well.
