I went to my first prenatal appt today, and the office sent home this hefty bag full of junk! I went through it and threw out 3/4 of it!! It was full of Babytalk stuff (this awful awful mainstream yuckola magazine), adds for baby formula, a sample sposie, all this information that NOWHERE mentions the idea that you could take your baby to bed with you to get more sleep or reduce the chances of SIDS... tips on crib safety but not on safety w/ baby in bed with you... tips on nursing with lousy pictures that don't clearly show latching on correctly even though they describe it and then go on to talk about bottle feeding in as great a detail, commenting how whether you go bottle or just supplement from time to time---like that's a good idea? :

There was ONE brochure from WIC promoting breastfeeding that only a tiny portion of which was dedicated to how to be more nurturing if you're using a bottle.

Then there was the brochure on pain management in labor that had a third of one panel dedicated to non-medication techniques (as an afterthought, more or less), and with NO mention of waterbirth...

I'd forgotten just how scary the mainstream model of treating babies can be! Thank Frigga for MDC!!!!!!! Without this place I'd go crazy!
