We're getting our new puppy next week and I've never done a raw diet before. I've done extensive online reading, so I know I don't want to use a diet that recommends grains (except maybe tiny, tiny amounts of sprouted grains) and I'd also prefer a program that recommends little to no vegetables. I need something that will explain in detail how to implement a raw foods diet from puppyhood through adulthood. TIA!

I've heard that books by Tom Lonsdale are excellent. Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health is the one you should get if you only want to buy one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=...0meaty%20bones

Also Dr. Pitcairn's book is good, but his recipes contain too much grain IMO. But his book also has a significant reference section on natural remedies: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/157...Fencoding=UTF8

Dr Ian Billinghurst! He is really considered the "father" of BARF~ his books include:

"Grow your Pups with Bones"
"The BARF Diet"

Now, he is definetely NOT a great writer, nor did he pay much for an editor... but the info is worth millions! I was lucky enough to go to one of his seminars several years ago and learned an incredible amount.

Other good authors are Kymythy Shulze and Wendy Volhard.

Lots of luck! I've been raw feeding for just over ten years and it's worth every effort!

The Billinghurst books are really scattered--they're self-published and you can tell he didn't have a great editor! For first-timers I recommend Sue Johnson's Switching to Raw (http://www.switchingtoraw.com/); it's much more readable. Lonsdale is right on the money, but he's very political and feels (probably justifiably) that the vet establishment is out to get him. Billinghurst and Johnson will advise veggies; Lonsdale says you don't need 'em.
