It's not a bunch of hype. What pasteurization does is sharply reduce bacterial growth, including pathogenic bacteria like listeria to which pregnant women, especially in their 2nd trimesters, are far more susceptible than the general population. It's your choice, of course, but given that the negative consequences of listeriosis can include miscarriage, unless I'm mistaken, I would ask myself this question: Why can't I live without raw milk for nine months?
Because Charles, grass fed raw milk (like breastmilk) from healthy cows kills pathogenic bacteria quickly when introduced, it cannot live in the milk. It makes a HUGE difference what cows are fed, if they are on their native diet, grass, the are much healthier and their milk is of better quality and nutrition... so the bacteria is not even going to be there in the first place.

One has to know the history of pasteurization and why it was "needed" in the first place... because feedlot cows are fed crap grains, which changes their digestion, intestinal flora and immune system. They commonly have mastitis, etc. which is why they would need abx so frequently as well.

Dr. Ron Schmid's book The Untold Story of Milk is excellent on history and benefits of raw milk. Excerpted and linked in this post of mine all about raw milk:

Using raw milk, I've cured 4 immune system conditions in the past 1.5 years.

Also directly from the CDC:

In an outbreak of listeriosis that occurred in Massachusetts in 1983, pasteurized whole or 2% milk was implicated as the source of infection (6). An inspection of the milk-producing plant detected no apparent breach in the pasteurization process, thereby prompting further interest in the effectiveness of pasteurization. Since then, several studies have shown that L. monocytogenes is inactivated by standard pasteurization practices (4,7-10). This report summarizes information regarding the effectiveness of pasteurization in eliminating L. monocytogenes from milk...

Two percent of pasteurized milk samples from more than 700 U.S. milk-producing plants were culture-positive for Listeria species, primarily L. monocytogenes, in a survey conducted during 1987 and 1988 as part of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) Dairy Product Safety Initiatives (13).
Also there are many indications that pasteurized milk is at least one cause of the tremendous amount of dairy allergies in this country.

Pasteurized milk is less nutritious as many vitamins are also destroyed or reduced and the minerals are less bioavailable.

Besides the fact that the huge amounts of killed bacteria in pasteurized milk are still there! And our bodies need extra nutrients to filter them out at the very least. I also wonder whether we still react to killed bacteria in dirty milk even if it's been pasteurized ... after all our bodies respond to attenuated (killed) vaccines.

Given the risks in either direction, then, it seems safest to avoid it, period, in whatever form.

Well unfortunately it's not safe to have a deficient diet either, and milk substitutes don't cut it in terms of nutrients. Bone broths are the only other source of absorbable calcium that I would trust.

I guess you could do liver and seafoods for the X Factor. I still cannot remember if pastured eggs have it ... ?

Raw dairy is such a good source of raw fats and proteins though too. Not sure where that can come from on a regular basis. That is why the reliance on it for NT diets... it's what our Western palates are used to.
From a known source....good farmer... I don't see ANY risk in drinking raw milk. I drink it pregnant, nursing and feed it to my kids everyday.
Happily

I have consumed it raw through all of my pregnancies. As did quite a few of my aunts. I don't seen the point of cooking all the nutrients out if it.
