I just found out I am pregnant, and my dh asked if I am still going to consume raw milk. I said yes, but then he made me feel a little doubtful. We get it from a great local dairy, we've been getting milk there for over a year, and my dd (2.5) drinks it. Is it safer to turn it into raw yogurt? I know miscarriage is a risk of raw milk. I did read "The Untold Story of Milk" a year ago. Any Thoughts?
Thanks,
Raw milk is so much healthier than conventional processed milk. I'd have to reservations drinking it while pregnant if I was comfortable with the source.

Miscarriage is only a risk if the milk is contaminated with a pathogen like listeria, which does not live inside the cow, it has to come from an outside source. The risk is not associated with raw milk per se, but with contamination. BTW, listeria has been in pasteurized milk in many disease outbreaks.

That said, it's not good to keep drinking it if you're scared. Do what you need to maintain your comfort level, while trying to make a rational decision based on your knowledge of raw dairy in general and the farm you get yours from specifically.

Some people do believe it's "safer" to culture raw milk into yogurt or kefir or the like, because the increased activity of the culture organisms would crowd out any possible pathogens, but I don't know that there's any actual proof of that.

we get ours from a small family dairy and the owners drink it themselves when preg and otherwise. Raw milk consumption from a clean, non-commercial dairy is safe. If you have doubts discuss this with the owners, take a tour and decide on your own. I would NEVER consume pasteurized dairy while pregnant, lactating or otherwise. So, if you go off the milk go off the dairy all together, IMO. You can make homemade yogurt with it but the heating involved in this process wouldn't kill the microbes you'd be worrying about with contaminated raw milk. I drank the milk the whole time I was pregnant and nursing with wonderful results, as did my supplier.

I drink raw milk all the time. We purchase from a local supplier and I'm pretty confident of their practices. I trust raw milk more than I trust the processed stuff. Also, if I didnt think it was safe for me, i wouldnt give it to my 2 year old, yk?

just chiming in to agree with pp... i drank raw milk during both of my pregnancies...i think if you know the source & their farming practices, then it's great to include in a pregnancy diet!

Thank you for your thoughts. My instinct is to keep drinking it. I do trust this dairy, and feel their practices are safe. Thanks everyone for the vote of confidence!
