We have a very-not-nice family member (by marriage) whose name is Candida. It is very fitting.

I worked with a woman named Lammy and one day the phone rang while she was and it was for her and I took a message and the woman said:
Tell her her sister Bunny called.

It was only then that I realised that her name was Lamby like a lamb!

I also met a very young hippy who gave her daughter the middle names Lovely Cinnamon Girl.
I cant remember what the first name was because I was so stunned over the middle names.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned the infamous Lemonjello (or his twin, Orangejello).

Before we go down the orangejello/lemonjello/vagina/ledasha route, can we read

http://www.babynamewizard.com/archiv...-race-part-one
http://www.babynamewizard.com/archiv...-race-part-two
http://www.babynamewizard.com/node/30339

Also, Pilar is a fairly common Spanish name in tribute to Mary.

http://www.behindthename.com/name/pilar

And Conception would probably be an alternative spelling of the not uncommon Spanish name Concepcion, also a tribute to Mary.

http://www.behindthename.com/name/concepcio10n

My husband knows a family that named their little girl "Clita," pronounced clit-uh. Thankfully they do not live in an English-speaking country and hopefully never will!

I am not saying that telling the story of Le-a, or Lemonjello and Oranjello, or Male and Female (that's MAH-lay and feh-MAH-lay, of course) makes you a racist. People of every color and background repeat the stories because they're clever and amusing. What I am saying is that as a group, the legend names have a context and meaning we shouldn't ignore. Or to put it another way, I haven't mentioned a word about Ledasha's race, but didn't you draw assumptions about it? And aren't those assumptions a key part of the story?

As for unusual names, some of the wackiest ones I've seen have been right here on MDC.

I work at a University and we have to verify student files, so with a 22K population of students, we see a lot of names...our favorites

Aquanetta (like the hair spray?)
Gordon Gordon Gordon (first name, middle name, last name)
Christian Dior (first and middle)
Wiley Davenport (all I could imagine here was an unruly couch as that's what my grandma calls a sofa)

We've also seen Candidia.

But my all time favorite...

Dick Tracy Pancho Valdez (I'm really not lying) came into the office the other day and when I asked him if he went by both "first names" or not, he smiled and said, I learned two important things from my whole name. 1) my mom is a bit eccentric and 2) I learned how to fight. I added 3) you learned to have a sense of humor! He was so cute about the whole thing.

We've got a really diverse/ethnic population and some of them definitely make you shake your head, but hey, variety is the spice of life, right?

My name is Leighanne, last name Denja and I also teach at the University and all my international students are always disappointed when they meet me to see I'm just another white girl...they always say, you're not what I expected from when I saw your name in print and signed up for your class...but we usually end up fast friends just the same!
