On this other board I go to (which is quite mainstream), this lady posted a message that her daughter is doing a science project on which diaper holds the most without leaking (I know, I know : ). Anyway, she was asking for some people to send her some different types of diapers. Sooooooo, of course I chime in and say what about a cloth diaper??? She is interested! She wanted to know where she could buy one and how much they were. I really don't want to send her to a store to buy one for fear she'll be scared off by the price. I was just going to mail her one and ask that she mail it back to me.

So which one do I send?????? The little girl is 9, so all these Elem school teachers and parents are going to see this dipe. It has to be CUTE and has to beat all those sposies for absorbancy!!! I'm feeling the pressure! LOL

This is what I have:
HH, FB, cpf, bummis snap and velcro, SP fitted, GG, Cricketts, LL, JB, hemp prefold

So what should I send?

Sorry so long! TIA!

I'd go with something hemp...the hemp prefold would work great!

...Might not win as "cutest" but would surely beat the 'sposies in absorbency.

Hmmm...but it would be nice to show a whole dipe...Could they do a hemp prefold in a HH? That would show a cute dipe, AND how dry it stays!!!

Good Luck, good for you for speaking up, and good for her for being open-minded!

Nothing is going to beat a sposie in absorbency. It would have to be one super thick hemp concoction. I got a Huggies sample in the mail and had poured 3 cups of water in it with nary a leak before dh stopped me. I bet it would have held another cup. I would have a hard time loaning a dipe for a non-cd'r, even in the interests of science. But you could pass this site along:

http://www.bareware.ca/analyzer.htm

Cool site!

Maybe you could interest a on-line store in donating a babykicks hemp in exchange for a small line : Thanks to ___.com for donating the CD products. That way if anyone sees the CD, they'd know where to go for more info. Anyways, you could pass that along to the mom. just a suggestion.

Sounds like a great project -- just wish they were interested in the quality of the materials and baby vs. absorbancey

Then again I look fore dipes with absorbancy, but I'll admit that in my selection there are points for "cuteness" as well!

Ok, I'll stop talking, er typing.

I agree with something hemp, but I think a fitted would be better than a prefold if possible

Maybe a fitted or stuffed pocket diaper to show the kids what is out there in cloth dipes.

I vote a pocket dipe stuffed with microterry. Hemp is absorbant, but the microterry is a bit more absorbant, IMO.
What you are doing is so cool!
Trouble is, if her emphasis is on absorbency, the cloth won't win.

How about a leaflet with it about why cloth is best, with some pics of the amount of landfill that a year's sposies will create? Something to make the kids think. Plus the fact that a sposie shouldnt be left on long enough to get that wet - and the yucky chemicals that are in them. Chidlren are really sensitive to environmental issues, who knows, if they have an innovative teacher, it might spark off some more projects.

You could include some questions to ask. Eg maths - if a baby wears 12 diapers a day, how many will he use in a year? If they cost 15 cents each, how much will his parents spend? If they fill two trash cans a week, how many trash cans will they fill in a year?

I did a similar topic on smoking years ago with elementary children - how much will you spend on cigarettes over 1 month, 1 year, 10 years. along with how much a sports car cost. By the end of it, they all swore they'd never smoke, and the ones that did, swore they were going to quit.

I think that is an excellent way to go about showing the difference!!!
