Hi,
My dd has influenza (yes, the actual flu--she was tested for it), and she has strep throat on top of that. Poor girl. She is almost 9.

My mom is kind of giving me a hard time for not having gotten her a flu shot at the beginning of flu season this year. Please reassure me that I did the right thing! Remind me why I don't "do" flu shots!! Thanks!!

I'm sorry she is so sick.

Flu shots have thimerosol in them and they don't work. It is very likely she would have gotten the flu anyway- it could be a strain not even in the vaccine. (That's why we don't get flu shots, amongst other reasons).

Within 3 days she'll build immunity to strep.

I do hope she feels better soon. What are you doing for her?

Your mom needs to get informed about the flu vax. Five flu vaccines consecutively (in 5 yrs.) increase her chances of getting Alzheimer considerable.

Just thought you should let her know.

If she was tested for it, was the strain she had in the influenza vaccine anyway? They should have told you that.

It sounds to me as if she needs some hefty doses of vitamin C, a liquid mineral programme and 150mcgs of selenium a day, so that her immune system can fend off viruses more easily...

Even if the type of flu she had was in the shot, that doesn't mean that the shot works. Many studies have been done that show that it doesn't.

Rather than get concerned about your mother's lack of understanding of either the vaccine, or what constitutues health, I'd be working towards changing my children's lifestyle to try to reduce the chances of it ever happening again.

And I wouldn't talk to her about what you are going to do in that line either, since it's highly unlikely she would understand. I found that the proof of the pudding (that my kids never got the flu, and when they did get something it was very mild) was the best way to shut my parents up.

And remind her, politely, that its not her business to tell you how to bring up your child.

My MIL (a nurse) refuses the flu shot every year. In her opinion (30+ years as a nurse) the flu shot does nothing except make people think they are protected. She feels this is an even bigger problem because people who think they are immune don't always take proper precautions (like hand washing) seriously. In all the years I have known her she has only gotten the flu shot once and she got sick 3 times that year.

Gitti...I have never heard this before! I suffered with strep my whole childhood and kept getting put on antibiotics for it. I was wondering what I'd do if dd got strep throat, since I don't want to use antibiotics on her, but this is very encouraging. (you know I trust your advice) Where can I read more about this?

Thanks...and sorry for hijacking!

Oh gawd, me too, my childhood was a sea of pink (penicillan). I finally got my tonsils out in 8th grade and never got strep after that. I'd love to know how to avoid a similar scenario for my DS if he is cursed with the same thing. Obviously, the antibiotics did no good . I was on them at least 4x times a year. At least my mom made them culture me every single time.

Seriously....a sea of pink......4x/day ......for 2 weeks....forever it seemed.....every spring break I got strep so I spent vacation on the sofa.....then the pink stuff shoved down my throat:puke

How about the people who get the flu shot and then are sick as can be for days afterwards? Then they get the flu again the next year and so on yet never had the flu before getting the shot.

My brother and I passed strep throat back and forth for years. He had his tonsils out and I never got it again, poor kid, he was so sick after surgery.
