I really really need some advice here, as little one is due in early Nov, and I'd like to get organised. I had a ring sling with dd that I never really got comfortable with...and would really appreciate recommendations for a sling for the new babe.

I'm a shade under 6 feet tall, and typically, ahem, curvy - about a size 14-16 pre pregnancy. I have wide shoulders and hips, so I'm pretty well-balanced. I've seen some stretchy 'peanut' type slings and they look really comfy for the baby, but I have absolutely no idea how to go about choosing one...$$$ are tight too, so I'm not going to be able to buy more than one...

TIA!

What was it about the RS that didn't work for you? A lot of times, shoulder styles plays a HUGE role in how comfortable a mama will find a sling. I'd be really inclined to say that a RS would be the best way to go for you.

Are there any babywearing groups in your area? I'm guessing you're from the UK or Canada? (
: apologies if I'm WAY off) There are quite a bit of groups in both those areas. You could check out www.TheBabywearer.com to see where some of the groups are meeting. I'd see if you can check out some styles IRL before you commit to something.

If funds are very tight and you want something right away, I'd suggest a Moby wrap. It'll be plenty long enough and although wrapping can be intimidating, once you get it down, it's really a piece of cake.

If you do want a stretchy pouch, I'd probably tell you to try an adjustable one. The adjustable part will help to accomodate your post-partum/not-quite-back-to-pre-baby weight.
The customer service reps should be able to work with you to find a great fit. Don't be afraid to call and ask for help. Ask about the return policy, just in case the fit is wrong.

thanks so much - yes, I'm in Canada.

With the RS I never seemed to be able get dd 'snugged up' enough in there - does this come down to practise? She never complained, mind you

I'll check out the groups you mentioned - thank you!

I had that exact problem with my Maya Wrap which is why I finally got rid of it. I had no problem with my OTSBH. I could keep my babies as close as I wanted them, with no slipping. Although, a lot of people don't like the extra padding. I just got a Rockin' Baby sling. I haven't been able to wear it much (since I'm a huge whale right now! LOL.), but it doesn't seem to have the same problem as the Maya did. It seems to stay where I put it. It was a little pricey though (it was my big splurge!). So, maybe it just depends on the different fabrics.

It is totally about practice! And finding great resources for hints and tricks. www.zolowear.com and www.taylormadeslings.com have great instructional pages on their websites. I think www.Oopababy.com just came out with new video instructions.

Canada has Koala Mamas Babywearing groups all over.
