I too love The Read Aloud Handbook. I've also used the NY Times Guide to Children'e Books, as well as something called Great Books for Girls and Great Books for Boys, although i'm not sure that those are the exact titles. Sometimes Amazon has reviewers who post lists of their favorite children's books, often by topic, which can be a fun resource.
