Are you in or near the Twin Cities? Do you want to be?
Well, then you have found your tribe! Despite our diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and interests, two things bond us together: living in the coldest state on earth...and the love for our children which warms us. The weekly tribe thread begins anew each Saturday. Watch for the new thread on the main Minnesota/Wisconsin board.

Some of the individuals who post here meet weekly. If you are interested in attending a get together, please post your interest on the thread or send any one of us a PM. We welcome with open arms and minds the input of all parents, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, political view, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, etc.

wow, we were quiet last week--only 29 replies!!

moon--you are limited to 10 books at the library?? what a travesty! some days we find the "only 2 DVDs" limiting!! and what is dearest son going to be for h'ween??

yes, $24 is a bit much...but it was the only 'roo i could find...MIL said she may have a Beanie Baby, so she will check for us. i need to now soon, b/c the size of her joey depends on the size of her pouch. and we need to be done by Friday...as for what made her want to be a 'roo, i have no idea. that was what she said so that is what we went with.

sara--DH will not be at the store Fri (he is off to Atlanta for the Ace convention). will you be halloween partying Fri eve? or is there another plan?

ok, off to get directions to the shower and then to the apple orchard, our plan for tomorrow!

love to all!

happy soverday!!!!~

snow...ugh, sorry you have to cancel your day and work! congrats on the show's opening! how is dd's little nose?

batty...the beanie in the pouch will be so cute! ds is going to be salem the cat from sabrina, and i'm gonna be a witch (he says i can't be sabrina cuz i don't have long yellow hair). yup a 10 book limit.

brown...well you'll be delighted to hear that we had to stop ds from watching reruns of sitcoms in the evening. used to think it was cute that he knew all the people on friends and raymond. till the other day. he and dh saw a hot chica on tv and ds said 'you want to have sex with her don't you' yup, you read that correctly. dh asked where he heard that and ds just repeated the sex thing. dh said 'baby, you're too little to say those things'. then ds said 'ok daddy. what is sex?' to which my lovely man replied 'something married grownups do'. (he left off the part about having to be 30 too)

daam...started reading 'the unschooler's handbook' last night. really good book.

Moon~
Always delighted to hear of less television in anyone's life! Um, that sounds like a good idea for Bas at this point! Yikes.

Remember we had an electric surge blowout a couple weeks ago? Our t.v. went toast. I was so happy....well, in part. The boys were mega bummed. They do watch videos like 'The Boy and the Snowman' and 'Goodnight Moon' on week-ends and occasions...you know, like when it is better to do so than for me to parent them! It has been nice to say, "The t.v. is broken"...and it's the truth! I, however, want to watch my Ani 'render' video once per week and occasionally rent vids from amazon or foreign flicks...I do want a replacement!! Who knows what we will all get outta the deal.

So, we had projectile vomit here the other night. Fun fun. Fish...after a visit with his papa. I wasn't sure if it was what he was fed or a flu bug. Maybe both...won't go into detail there...trust me. :puke He seems fine now, but what an ordeal...my poor sensitive Fish hugging me and sobbing and sounding like Dorothy in Wizard. "Oh mama, that was horrible...so horrible...horrible."

I was going to try and bike Blue and I to sg, but women...he is a drama toddler today. We slept in waaaaaaaaay late and methinks this has upset the routine for my little morning lark.
We would be late comers if we show around 1.

Snow~ Let me know if you need someone for M in a pinch! We could have taken her under our wing today...so call next time okay...please? Hope things settle down very very soon!

Kangaroo costume sounds so cute! We have a little stuffed beanie kanga Batty...you are welcome to borrow it!

Blue will be a spider and/or a bee...just the best thrifted costumes...Blue did say he wanted to be a toaster. ?!?! hmmmm. I'll just have to invalidate that request this year.

Fish still says he wants to be Hercules, but now he wants to know who "Zorro" is and who Zorros friends are because that is who Hugo wants to be...Please Maude, let the Peter Pan fetish return...as we are stocked on that one.

I know I missed some things on the end of the last thread...great excuse to make it all about me.

Oh look, Hugo and Hugos are here for coffee...perhaps I shall drag them...

Are you all knitting today? Don't think I can come sunday.

Hey mommas. Sorry we were no shows today. I wanted to come knit, but we slept in way too late, so I was late exercising, and then I decided I had better get my rear in gear and clean this house for the Halloween party and Imala's little friend celebration tomorrow. We also had to get one practice session in on the violin and viola and suddenly the day is half over. Right now I need to sift through the material for next week, but wanted to jump on and say hey. I am really hoping to be at SG next sat.; hope you will be there Jessikate.

Brown~ So sorry about the puking!
I am knocking on wood over here that we stay healthy through all the upcoming festivities.

Okay, hafta run.

No SG for us today... my mom was here last night on her way down to Rochester to see my grandparents. We woke late and went out for breakfast, then the ILs came and we went out for lunch and walked on Grand Ave for a bit. Came home, had a nap and a walk around the block. Now watching recorded cooking shows from PBS today.

I think we'll be at SG next week. No guarantees, though.

I think I'm gonna have to retract my offer for knitting at my house... I need to do some cooking to keep myself away from fast food this week (and use up the 2 dozen eggs I somehow ended up with). I'm thinking quiche, maybe make some ice cream... does quiche freeze well? Of course, I'd be more likely to eat it before it made it to the freezer.

All the Halloween prep is entertaining to read about. We've got an outfit for G, but I'm pondering the options - I'm thinking some red polarfleece made into a cape, black dots of fleece stuck on with iron-on interfacing, and black pants underneath. Quick and easy ladybug! We'll see if I get a chance to go to the fabric store this week, and can avoid spending DH's whole paycheck there.

Hope the sickies are feeling better... how are Hugos and Curvie doing? Sending healing thoughts in that direction.

Should really head off to bed, but now we have Julia and Jacques to watch. I am so addicted to cooking shows... why can't I get off my duff to make some of the things they make me crave?

thanks for the 'roo offer, but we actually got the beanie baby one yesterday from step-MILs dear niece at the shower. so i just sewed the pouch on, although now we have sag issues...cotton sure isn't the sturdiest fabric! stuffed the tails last night after kids were abed, but wanted to sew them on with the kids in front of me, so i knew how long to make them. same with ears...

moon--i do remember now that you said B wanted to be salem...and good for you all with the TV limiting! it is hard, but when one hears comments like those...

brown--how's dear fish's tummy?? poor guy! a toaster, too funny!!

ok, off to get directions to the orchard up here in white bear lake. i heard rave reviews about Apple Jacks, but Delano is just too far from this here 'burb!

enjoy the gorgeous sunday we have been blessed with! 70+ degrees, WOW!!

well, e is going to be a butterfly this year. my mil & i made the costume last week. e loves it.

we actually wanted to got osg yesyerday, since we had no other plans and haven't been in months and months...but, we have colds. bill, fi and i are okay...but e is uber snotty in more ways than one. so, we stayed home and i made chicken stock, the chicken veg soup, then curry squash soup, and 8 loaves of bread.

fi is doing wonderfully. can't believe she'll be 3 weeks tomorrow! she's nestled in the new fleece sling right now.

jess - we have e's ladybug from last year if your interested.

brown - oy, where to start?

moon- i wanna read that too.

snow - missing you!

doula - congrats!

I am sick -- the virus monster has finally caught me! Everyone else is fine! Had some of DH's colleagues over for din din last night, which was great fun!

gonna work on my syllabus for next semester (major yikes!!!)

Batty -- friday night for camping equipment exchange sounds great! See you then!

Hugs to everyone!

Boys will be wearing hand me down costumes!

Jessikate - see you Wednsday. I have an appt at james' school at 3:45, so anytime other than that will be fine (more or less) Oh, eggs will keep 30 days, so if you know they are fresh, you're fine. And Angel food cake uses a TON of eggs!

Oops, must run and not comment on all the great stuff written this week already! John just filled his pants and I don't want it oozing onto my pants!!!

Missed everyone that didn't make it to SG yesterday. W & I saw U and Q and Starfire and her little one.

Brown- yikes...hope the vomit goes away. poor guy......but yeah on the lack of tv. I have toyed with idea of putting ours away but I think dh might consider it grounds for divorce.lol

Saramama- hope you feel better soon!

Jessikate- it's more fun to watch someone else make complicated, yummy meals. At least that's my excuse. Another good one is 'I don't have the time/energy to hunt down funny/rare ingredients'

Kdmw- would love the hear more about the Oak meadow. It seemed really spendy so before I even think about spending that I want to know it's good. Do you ever make it to SG? I swear, this is the only time I miss living in the cities. When I want to talk to people interested in the same stuff I am.lol Everyone up here seems to homeschool for religious reasons. Moast of the cirriculum I hear about is Christian based, it's just not a good fit for us, ykwim?

Doula- Congrats!!!
Is it just me or is the tribe growing by leaps and bounds????

Moon- I will check out the pbs site.

DAAM- pregnancy is good. i'm starting to look preggo instead of chubby, thank goodness. S seems fine with it. I'm getting worried about how W will deal. I almost feel like I cheating her out of her 'mommy time'.S had me alone for 5 yrs. then just dh & I and her for another 3. Not that I want 8 yrs. between kids but, oh hell, i don't even know what I mean. If anyone else does, feel free to explain it to me.

I have another prenatal on the 21st. I'm hoping to get an order for the u/s( I really want to know the sex!) and I think the dr. will set up my sugar test. Not looking forward to that. My sugar got all out of whack at the end will W so I was induced 2 wks. early. Everyting was fine but I want the labor to go natural, even if I end up giving birth at home and dh passes out.lol Good thing, I only live 15mins. from the hospital. I wonder if it's close enough???

ok, no more thread hogging for me. I should be showering or sewing or cleaning hmm, can I hide here instead? That all sounds very tiring.

PS- going to the pumkin patch today.........in SHORTS! How cool is that?

I really have wanted to come down to s.g. the last two weeks. this weekend my husband whole family was here my mother came into the mix as well.

My fil is a huge monster man. We actually got in a yelling fight in the car. (oh my god!) About how my husband has abandoment issues because he was so hard on them and I would never force my son in a crib. I got home and was so pissed at the ol' man for not sticking up for me.

then we went to dinner at the king and I and my mom got prawns and was taking the shells and tails off and eatting them. My Fil told my mom you were suppose to eat the shells and tails in this really mean belittling tone . As if my mom was stupid. My mom was hurt I was pissed and the ol' man didn't do anything.

my fil was talking really gross stuff about women to me

I just had a great weekend and they don't leave until tomorrow evening

hey mamas~

sara...ugh. i hope you feel better asap.

brown...yuck! i hope fish just ate something that disagreed with him. will you and the neighborladies be reimbursed for all you lost in the great toast of '03?

mpls...sorry to hear that. i wish everyone could be kind.

will...check out 'the idiot's guide to homeschooling'. it has lots of information on the different types of schooling, plus ref. pages. you could also check out mn's official homeschool website for links. that way you can decide how you want to teach, and with what (if anything). you can also find links to discount and used texts. tons of websites have free download lesson plans. the best thing is the library. use it!

supi...aww 3wks already? i hope your family gets better soon.

batty...is it possible to pick a bit of the seam on the beanie, then drain the beans out of the main section? then just refill after halloween and resew.

jessi...i love cooking shows too! ds too. saturdays ds and i usually clean the house, so we keep pbs on all day (cooking shows non-stop). our newest fave is 'rick bayless'.

tv...well it is going quite well with no evening tv. he never gets limits, so doesn't care if it is on or off for the most part. last night we read alot, then they played cars. he is watching tv now, but it is a pbs special on alaska, so i don't mind. he has learned so much from the shows he watches. he knows we are strict on content, and has only once tried to watch a forbidden show. he seems drawn to things i would want him to see anyway. speaking of which. we watched 'fosse' today, and he spent a few hours (in a black derby) trying to dance like them. snow i thought of you, and wished you could have seen him.

ok i've babbled long enough.

If we ever move to Chicago, I have made a vow that I will get a job at his restaurant. That is the only thing that could get me back into cooking professionally.

I thought G was asleep for the night and I'd have some free time to myself for once. Nope. She's awake and creeping around the furniture, stalking my laptop and knitting. Sigh.

is anyone interested in a nun costume for halloween?
I wore it last year. It is a pretty nice one, all fabric poly cotton blend. Just add crucifix.

I'd be willing to trade for something (maybe a costume?) or just trade for the evening. I thought it was a riot that I went as a pg nun last year but have since been informed that it was in terrible taste, so I don't reccommend any preggie mamas wearing it. (I wore an ankh instead of a cross)

and I am looking for a used infant car seat. I know many of you are going to be using your's again, but anyone who isn't. My friend Ellie's babyshower is thurs and the only thing she needs is a infant seat and wants a used one. anyone?

and one more thing...does anyone know where to get Gentian Violet in the twin cities?

I know this probably should go in the twincities swap threads, but I'm just not a conformist like that.

so hi everyone....I still miss you all.

Jessikate- this had me lol. I get a mental image of your sweet, little G prowling like a cat. Plotting how to get the knitting and get away w/o getting busted.

Marigold, you might just try calling a old fashioned (ie not a chain) drugstore. you might be surprised.

Sue -- your pants look a little darker, but those "worn areas" didn't change a lot

Creeping around furniture...wow. Just put john in one of those saucer seats for the first time!
