Red rings around the legs..need advice

974 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  DreamingMama
I just switched to cloth and am using CPFs with Bummis Whisper Wraps and they leave these red rings around DSs legs. They also seem to scratch him. That can't be better than disposables!

Are they just too small? Should I try different covers? I have one Happy Heiny and he's wearing it now, so we'll see how it does.

Also, what should I stuff the Happy Heiny with? Right now it has a prefold, but it's huge! I'm thinking the prefolds are too big for the covers.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

I had that problem with bummis, too, once DD got bigger. (we loved them for the NB stage). They could be too small, but DD was in mediums at 16lbs and they were leaving red marks.

Maybe a fleece cover? www.thecalicobaby.com has a great deal on some. If you really like PUL, I'd recommend the motherease airflow... www.motherease.com...they are side snap, so no velcro rub and they are softer on the legs. Do be sure you get the right size, though.
I'd definitely size up on covers if you want to stick with that type, and stuff a hemp pocket stuffer or two in that HH rather than a PF

I'm not familiar with the mainstream (for lack of a better word) covers out there, but I know my ds had a problem with any FOE (fold-over elastic for binding), and I've sworn off velcro. My Moose is just too active and always managed to get himself scratched.

I bought those too when I started cding because so many people said they use them. I hated them. They left worse red marks than sposies. I bought a few wool soakers instead and they are awesome. No red marks and much cuter. I use the Bummis for swim dipes.

I didn't like them either because of the red marks. We use wool now for our covers over fitteds and PF.
i'm not sure if you want the ease of velcro or snaps, but i love the pull up pants. (i'm a bit weird and like the little white pants.) they are great and never leave a mark on my ds--and he has some chunky thighs.
A few more questions:

I want to try wool, but DS is such a hot baby...he sweats as soon as he moves around. I'm afraid the wool will be too hot..i know it's breathable, but just wondering what your experiences are with a hot baby in the summer.

Would fleece be too hot in the summer too? I also know it's breathable...

GM..I think it was the velcro that was causing the scratches, now that I think of it. I wish I didn't buy those dipe covers...

It seems that everyone says they use prefolds, but no one really uses them when you ask them about thier system. Did I waste my money on them?

I'm going to try the hemp stuffing..

This can be so confusing.

Thanks everyone.

I actually use mostly fitteds and a few PF. I am snappi challenged but I can pin. I don't have any pockets but I know there are trimmer inserts available. Cottonbabies has one. I have a hot baby and I haven't had any problems with the wool. No heat rash or anything. She sweats when she nurses. I don't use fleece since I don't like it.

I agree. Fasten the prefold with a snappi and get a wool soaker like this one to go over it.

Wool is the coolest diaper cover for summer.

There really are people who use prefolds.

I have that problem too with the "bound" covers -- try the next size, if its bugetairly feasable try serged or t&ts and see if that helps.

I am one of those crazy people who really use prefolds(even flats too). I use pull on covers too. I do find that the bummis sww can leave red marks so I make sure I put it on looser. My favorite cover though for my prefolds are wool knitted soakers. On the hottest day in the summer I would put one on my ds over any other choice! I just pin or snappi the prefold and pull on a soaker. He looks very comfy I think.

I really use pfs! In fact, I find I use them more now that the weather is warmer. I just use no cover around the house. Seems like it would be the coolest.
Your baby is RIGHT at that super soft spongy squish thigh chub age. (Jett too!) so red marks are VERY common as his skin is so soft and his chub is so squishy. (admit it you squish it don't ya?) Anyway I have found the ONLY thing that doesn't leave red marks is something without elastic or something with elastic on really loose. I use a large in every diaper we have and it works. I just got a new large FMBG and it is insanely squishy above the elastic so no red marks, same with Valor Kids fitteds, really squishy above the elastic, make sure it is on loose enough. However if you get a bad red mark stay away from covers with cutting elastic, I prefer wool (knit or crochet) you can find recycled wool covers that are really inexpensive (I think New Life Woolens has some?).

I am really REALLY picky about my few fitteds that I do use, I have 3 kinds that I use regularly, Sugarbums, and VK, and now that I finally took the plunge this FMBG will be in high rotation too. I just ordered one from 7th heaven babies too off Universal Mama I can't wait to try that one too!

the cover or diaper is on too tight or is too small. I would get the next size up. Or if there is latex in the elastic your child could have an allergy to it. I have a latex allergy and get a nasty red rash from that.
