I'm knitting my first pair of socks and I'm about to do the heel. I think I read somewhere that you should knit some regular sewing thread along with your yarn to make a harder wearing heal. Has anyone actually done this? Does it really work? Should I do this for the toe too? Are there disadvantages to doing this?

I'm knitting these socks on itty bitty needles and investing some time into them. I'd like them to last as long as possible.

Any sock hints or tips would be welcome and appreciated.

Hmmm- I haven't ever done it- but I think it is actually nylon thread that helps them out. I wouldn't bother though if your yarn has nylon in it. GL!

Nope. No nylon in this yarn. The website says it's "sturdy enough to stand up to a hiking boot", but I don't know...

It is *lovely* to knit with, though.

I've also heard of double stranding your heel parts.

What kind of yarn are you using?

oops. I meant to include a link for my yarn in that last post. Here it is.

nylon reinforcing thread is generally what's used - I wouldn't use regular sewing thread as it might actually make the heel wear faster, as the thread cuts into the fiber of the yarn. Personally, I do short row heels, in garter stitch (which will be a bit thicker) to make them more durable

I do like Theresa and use a short row garter heel, but I knit the heel on a smaller needle than my gauge needle.

Doubling the yarn is also a good idea and what I plan to do for my dh who wears through heels faster than anybody's business.
