Doesn't the fact that UU has a pantheon of beliefs fall under the "gods" part of the definition?
As would Paganism?

Aaaarrrggghhh - I am fuming over that article!!! As a loyal UU'er I am just appalled that such a thing can happen. Just because a religion is creedless doesn't make it any less of a religion.

This just makes me :puke for so many reasons

First (but not most importantly): it is a total waste of tax payer money. Not only have UU been recognized the US (and world over) as a RELIGION, Tx has already been taken to court for this same issue (different religion).

I'm actually glad they did this to the UU faith though--- they have a lot of support and hopefully it will bring to light the *other* groups being denied this status:

"Since Strayhorn took over in January 1999, the comptroller's office has denied religious tax-exempt status to 17 groups and granted them to more than 1,000, according to records obtained by the Star-Telegram. Although there are exceptions, the lion's share of approvals have gone to groups that appear to have relatively traditional faiths, records show.

But of the denials, at least a fourth include less traditional groups, the records show. In addition to the Denison Unitarian church, the rejected groups include a Carrollton group of atheists and agnostics, a New Age group in Bastrop, and the Whispering Star Clan/Temple of Ancient Wisdom, an organization of witches in Copperas Cove."

IMO, if you *say* you are a religion, you are a religion. Innocent until proven guilty (in this case, of tax fraud).

It seems obvious that this is an attempt to use the power of the state to promote Christian belief systems.

When government officials think they can get away with stuff like this it's just more evidence that it's past time for regime change.
