My family and I are moving from NM to NE PA!! We're excited as this is where dh grew up.
I on the other hand am a bit stressed.
: I really want to find the right community for us as I'm due with our fourth babe in Jan. and would really like to find a community where I'll have some support. We're AP, slightly crunchy...hate the yuppy scene. I'd rather not be RIGHT in the city but don't want to be too far from shopping and things to do with the kiddos. The nice thing about dh's new job is that we can really be 45 miles from Scranton/Wilkes Barre a the most so it gives us a pretty wide area to search.

ANY help, or advice about good areas to look would be helpful. We'll probably be flying up in the next few weeks to hunt out a house.
TIA!!

I know there are some Scranton moms on here who can give you some info on that area. I live about 50 miles away in Milford, PA. Unfortunatly NE PA doesn't seem to be a haven for alternative parenting. Milford is a beautiful and artsy town, but I've had a hard time meeting like minded people. Honesdale is not too far from Scranton and I've met a bunch of wonderful moms there. It is also very affordable and has a health food store, farmers market, music fest, etc. It's definitly worth checking out. Best of luck on your move!

Yeah, you might want to aim a little further south toward the Lehigh Valley if you want any degree of Crunchy. Or a little further northeast toward the Hudson River valley area of NY. The only crunch you're going to find in the Poconos is from the coal...
There are a few mamas up there who are great (Paquerette comes to mind), but they're few and far between.

I have lived in Wyoming Valley for 25 years but now live in Susquehanna County. Neither area's are crunchy at all, just to warn you. Wyoming Valley is getting very bad with crime and I would avoid it. Susquehanna County is beautiful, lots of trees, mountains, lots of rural area's, farms, etc and has a low crime rate. People don't lock their car or houses around here, since there is no need to.

I live right down the highway from XC/WB... about 45 minutes south from downtown Scranton, below Hazleton, and 45 minutes northwest of Allentown. There pros and cons to living here, like anywhere else. The main Pro is lower cost of living. A big Con is that there are not too many like minded people around and just about everywhere is a 45 minute drive. I would guess that a lot of people would find living within 2 hours of NYC and Philly a plus too.

If you are interested, there are nice homes for sale in my area

Oh, I meant to add that the Lehigh Valley is most likely too far a commute unless your Dh really likes to drive, and the housing prices are really high. But, they do have an awesome LLL

Good luck on your move!

Thanks so much everyone! Those are some good starting points.
My second question would be the accessablity to a homebirth midwife??? I'm due in Jan and really had my heart set on a homebirth. Leaving my HB midwife here is about the only thing that makes me heartbroken to leave (that and my friends of course)
:
Any suggestions?
TIA!

I live in Madison TWP, near Gouldsboro area, which is about 20-25 minutes south of scranton. I love the area I live in. Rural, you pretty much live in the woods. But not far away from the city to do things. Again like most people say, it is pretty main stream. But the people are nice here, crime in my area is extremely low, north pocono school distract is good. I did finally find a midwife in Stroudsburg which is about 45 min. from where I live, I didn't check her out, but I plan to for when I have my next child, since she is the only one I have found.

There is lots of water, trees, little farms, tons of wildlife, it is definatly the place you want to be to get in touch w/ nature.

Yep, I'm holding down the crunchy fort in Scranton all by my lonesome.
: Please come help!
:

There are a handful of lay midwives in the area. You pretty much have to pay out of pocket since the state doesn't recognise their existence. Down toward lehigh valley I think there are hb mws who take insurance, and a birth center too.

hello milkmommie! we live in wilkes barre. everyone is right. the crunchies are few and far between around here! lol but the more we can get the better, so come on up!!

one thing to consider about distance, around here it seems to take so much longer to get anywhere due to all the hills and twisty turny roads. i would think this would be a bit of an adjustment comming from nm! my brother and his wife were just in from co a few weeks ago and were amazed at the time it took to get anywhere due to the crazy roads(loads of construction too!) and the lack of a straight way to get anywhere. lol (and they grew up here too!)

all things considered, it's not too bad i guess. there is a wegmans and some of the local grocery stores are getting a bit better at carrying natural/organic foods. i've heard there's a natural food store over in luzerne that sells raw milk... i haven't made it over there yet. lol it is a shoppers paradise over here though. there are so many new stores and shopping centers, too many choices! lots and lots of restauraunts.

from what i've heard the hospitals stink up here. lol there are a few midwives floating around though. hopefully if we have a third we will be having a homebirth. it's also something i'm concerned about doing in pa. but i've known some people who have done it. i had both my babies at geisinger in danville, which has gotten really nice. they have some really nice midwives working out there. that would be my second choice to travel to if i couldn't work out a midwife to homebirth up here.

there aren't really too many fun things to do with kids around here though. we homeschool, so we are always searching! there is lots of wonderful nature to observe! there are some really nice state parks around here. well, you could come play with me! i'm sorely in need of some more good crunchy friends.

we are currently househunting around the wilkes barre area(we've lived up here for almost 2 years, renting). it's not my first choice, but we don't want to be too far from dh's work right now, and we can't afford anything too far outside of town right now(this is our first house
). we are sort of looking at the kingston area, as well as around nanticoke and surrounding areas down there. we have family up in the benton area, and as much as it pains me to say it, as i couldn't wait to get out of there when i was a teenager, it's pretty nice up around there. it's about 40 min from wilkes barre and the rest of the world though. from what i've seen the back mountain area is really nice. that's sort of through the mountain inbetween wb and scranton.

a 45 min drive east will put you in bloomsburg, which i really like. it was our major town that we traveled to growing up(we were out in the boonies), and we live there for a year before moving up here to wb. they seem to be a bit more progressive down there. it's a really nice little college town. great lll that i miss terribly, but with dh's work schedule and it being 45 min away i haven't made it down to any meetings in a year now(it's a night meeting). the lll up here is usually just me and the two leaders. lol but they are nice ladies and we have fun.
i think there is a larger group that meets somewhere in scranton? paquerette would know maybe?

well, i've probably babbled on long enough. hope half of that was coherent! lol if you have any questions feel free to ask away. good luck on your househunt! when will you be in?

I grew up in that area! I left the area 2 years ago. But I still visit our families there two weekends a month. Homeschooling is a great idea if you will be buying a house there. Many of the schools really suck in that area. (education wise) Sure, some good kids come out, but I don't think I would want my kids around so much temptation.

Heroin is so popular in those schools now. Things have changed so much! I graduated in 1997 and you were considered "bad" if you drank beer and smoked pot. It was a safe area. Now that is considered candy, and heroin is the in thing to do. There is a shooting or drug bust on the news every day now.

But there are a ton of restaurants and it is the place to be if you like shopping. There are a couple of good flea markets, too. There is a drive in theater in West Nanticoke, reasonably priced so there are things to do. LOTS of bars and clubs if you are into that kind of thing. There are many good colleges for you and your kids. No need to travel far or dorm, some expensive, some dirt cheap. Summers are AWESOME since there are so many bazzars, picnics and fairs in Wyoming Valley. I haven't met anyone crunchy at all from the area.

I hope your house hunting is going well. I've lived in Kingston for a few years now, and it is a beautiful area. We have a great park called Kirby Park, where some nice walking trails are available or if you want to travel a few miles, there are numberous state parks or small parks with hiking, biking trails around. Good shopping areas as well as some good small cultural resturants. An excellent naturopath is close! I believe whereever we live, we have to make the best of it and find some new groovey people! Good Luck!

We're finding out now that DH is going to be based in Binghamton. That means that we're house hunting in Susquehanna cty and surrounding Binghamton. I think I'd prefer to be in PA but it seems there are more options within our budget up in NY.
We're actually flying out next week. I'm hoping for some nice cool NE weather!!! Hopefully we'll find something in NEPA so I can participate in your get togethers soon!

DH works in Binghamton and we live in Susquehanna county. Its not that bad of a drive. Housing is CHEAP in Susquehanna County. You can get a 4 bedroom 2 bath house for less than $100,000. We do our best to avoid the downtown Binghamton area when possible. (other than dh to go to work) Its NOT a nice area. There is a lot of crime, and it seems like a dirty city. Great Bend/Hallstead (PA)area is nice, and I would like to move there in the future. (We decided to live outside of town a bit) Blue Ridge school district is good. The exit to Interstate 81 is in GreatBend. So there is no commute to get to the highway. It is about a 20-25 minute drive from Hallstead/Great Bend to Binghamton. Great Bend/Hallstead is a small community, not rural, but not a city. Keep in mind if you live in NY you will have to pay sales tax on food and clothing. (I think its over 8%) And there is no sales tax on food and clothing in PA. PM me for more info if you like.
