I remember recently reading (I think in Mothering mag) about "cures" for colic. My friend's baby is very colicky and I can't find what it said to do! I also did the search function for colic and it didn't work. Help??

It's pretty funny how everyone's own experience colors their opinions so much, because I'm firmly 100% convinced that colic is related to emotional trauma
.

Seriously, though, I think it can be related to a number of things, one of which can certainly be mama's diet. In our case, dd had a very traumatic birth and deep suctioning, and it definitely traumatized her. After many months of hell on earth, we managed to sort it out with some crying in arms, chiropractic care and craniosacral therapy. CST is totally amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone! You can read more about what we went through here. If you think your friend fits into this scenario (e.g., traumatic birth) and she might be interested in CST, you can find a practitioner through this site. Look for someone with lots of classes, and training in somatoemotional release. Then call and ask if they work with babies. We see a massage therapist who specializes in CST, and she charges $30/session. My dd is truly a different child today because of what we did. I am so grateful.

(BTW, I recently saw a presentation from an OB who uses CST with his patients prenatally, during birth and also postnatally. As an OB at a NAVAL hospital, his c-section rate was 4%!!!! And that's as a senior physician who had to take the more complicated cases. And he also said there was little to no instances of colic with the babies he delivered and saw with the mamas.)

My baby Sydney was "colicky" until a few weeks ago. There are countless people who "know" what colic's about. It's great when their solutions work, but I tried "everything" out there & nothing worked for Sydney until she suddenly stopped having her "episodes" around 2.5 months. In the end nobody knows & everyone can just do what's best for their baby.

My best friend helped me by comming over every other day (sometimes every day) to hold Sydney & help bounce & love her while she was crying so I could have a break to recharge, brush my teeth, take a shower etc. I can't express how much this meant to me!!!

The best part is to see Sydney with her now... she LOVES kseniya so much & I know their special bonding time had a lot to do with it.

Good luck to you & your friend!!! The time passes so fast, now that Sydney is 3 months I already miss her newborn period, even though it was scary and stressful at first not knowing how to help her!

my friend was asking about gripe water--anyone have any good experiences with it?

and i'm not sure if her baby had a traumatic birth exactly although it could probably be considered as such-- he was taken early by c-section because her blood pressure and swelling were so great.

ds has severe colic which after much trial and error we figured out was caused by 1) dairy intolerance (had to eliminate all dairy) 2) my oversupply- my LC explained that he was getting so much foremilk that it was sort of like when a person eats nothing but salad- your stomach gets gassy and uncomfortable. She instructed me to nurse on only one breast per feeding (pumping just enough out of the other to relieve engorgement) I noticed ds's colic decreasing a lot when my milk supply finally evened out.
3) he needed a chiro adjustment. Even when the awful colic crying subsided he still seemed uncomfortable and wasn't sleeping well so we tried the chiro and within 3 visits he was much more mellow.

Colic to me is just like when adults are crabby- it could be any number of reasons- just like us, sometimes it's emotional, sometimes it's physical, sometimes diet, sometimes a combo.

DS had colic and we tried everything. Elimination diets, chiropractic, etc. Sometimes you just have to wait until their digestive system matures. To say one treatment will cure all cases of colic is ridiculous, especially considering the fact that nobody really knows what causes it. My chiropractor's daughter had colic, so I would assume if chiropractic "cured" colic, her daughter would have been "cured."

A lot of people on here will say that gripe water contains parabens and shouldn't be given to infants. We bought the Wellements brand, which is preservative free and needs refrigeration. I don't think it has parabens (at least I don't see them on the label). It worked better than most other things we tried, and I would recommend it. We still use it for basic gassiness and even sometimes for teething.

Having a friend/relative over to hold the crying baby is a great idea. I did that several times, and it really helped. Good luck to your friend!

I had a severely colicky baby and here is what I did:

Eliminated Dairy from my diet All Dairy including Whey and casein
Stopped prenatals b/c of the iron; some babies have problems with Iron
Started him on Wellemans Gripe Water 6x a day
Bought Cocyntal by Boirons for crying fits (This is a LIFESAVER!!!)
Dr. prescribed Zanax cause it turns out he has Reflux too

I now have a very happy baby who laughs and talks and coos ALL the time. I don't think he ever stops smiling!!! The dairy elimination took 3 weeks to notics a difference too!!

I'm guessing you meant Zantac?
When I read that I thought- man that baby must have some anxiety problems.

I can't believe the thread made it this far without mention of The Happiest Baby on the Block. My babe was crying for 6+ hours straight from about 3 weeks on. It was horrific. He stopped around 8 weeks. But the Happiest Baby book really helped us get on top of the crying jags with the 5 "s" - swing, swaddle, suck, shush, and side/stomach position.

There's a book and a dvd for HB, and I recommend both. Here is a website interview with dr. Karp:

Seriously. I started a thread here about ohhh, eight months ago in which I got pages and pages of advice (all of it good! it worked for them!), but this was our lifesaver. I tried everything - cst, diet, gripewater, CIA, etc. I think it's hard because colic often looks like stomach pain, but in our case, I guess it was just classic colic (no reason).

And I should add, he had a totally awesome water homebirth. Go figure.

My DD was very colicky starting around 6 weeks, and although it eased up around 2.5-3 months, she really didn't seem to get over it completely until after 3 months.

I tracked what I ate, made diet changes and everything, but that didn't seem to help. We went through every suggestion I've ever heard for colic (swaddling, rocking, things like vaccuming with her, wearing her all day, mylicon, music, etc etc), even Zantac. But nothing seemed to help. Then we tried Chamomile Catnip (a natural from Eclectic Kids), and that seemed to help sometimes. We also tried Cocynatal, which also seemed to help at times, but nothing was a "remedy" for my DD's colic. But the one thing that seemed to "help" the best (although only for short periods of time) was sitting in the bathroom with the shower running.

I can't believe I forgot about that! It really did help a lot- particularly the tip of trying the vacuum or hairdryer- the vacuum became our lifesaver, it always stopped the long crying spells when nothing else would.

yeah, for us, we had to do all five s' simultaneously - swaddled, in the sling sideways, while vacuuming, with a pacifier or breastfeeding...
