It's been a LONG time since I had a baby, my son is almost 7... can someone please remind me, in an rear facing seat do the straps go at or below or at or above the baby's shoulders? and for forward facing??

Also we have all old cars 2000 and below, with no anchors etc, it's still safe to use just the seatbelts to install the seats, with a locking clip right? In other words no LATCH and no tethers available. (We do have shoulder/lapbelt combos no cars with just lapbelts- well not true my hubby's 89 daytona does but we can't all fit in that anyway and we wouldn't ride in that thing anyway)

RF: at or below
FF: at or above

Seatbelt installs are perfectly fine. If you have locking seat belts, you don't necessarily need a locking clip. Just pull the seat belt all the way out to activate the locking mechanism, then install your seat and let in all the seat belt slack. It won't loosen.

You will want to tether the seat when it's FF (though, that's years away for your new one!), and it's usually a simple, inexpensive thing to have tether anchors retrofitted into your car at the dealer.

Thank you so much for your help... question, why do we want to install tethers can FF not use a seatbelt install? That's what we did with our son, and my husband is going to balk at having it done unless I can give him concrete reasons why it HAS to be done... since our son didn't use tethers it's not going to be easy to convince him... and when you saw simple and inexpensive, how inexpensive are we talking? Money is a major concern...

Technically, you CAN just do a seatbelt install with no top tether. However, the seats perform better with them (the head doesn't fly forward as violently in a collision.)

Sometimes, the install is free. Sometimes, you can pay for a very cheap part and do it yourself. To get details, call your dealership or check out car-seat.org

I got top tether hooks in my '93 Volvo and they were $17 each. I use the seatbelt install (no LATCH) with the top tether.
Also if your carseat can be tethered RFing (Britax or Radian), you don't need any special hooks in your car to do that.
