It's time to move DS into a convertible car seat, and my dear darling sweet wonderful mother is buying one for us this weekend. She got a Britax for my sister and is willing to spend a little more for a good safe carseat. We'll probably go to Target, so nothing too rare or obscure, but which brand would you recommend?
The one caveat is DS is violently allergic to the slick, waterproof fabric in some car seats, so it needs to be the cotton-y kind rather than the shiny kind.

How about the Sunshine radian 65 or 80? I don't know if they sell it at target, but I know that Walmart has it on their website, and if your local store participates in site to store, then you can order it online, and have it delivered to your store for free. Of course, the stores in Puerto Rico don't participate, so i had to go to a fancy baby store and pay extra.

I LOOOOVE my Marathon. I also have a TrueFit and really like it too. It hasn't totally stolen my heart like the Marathon but it has a taller shell so will last RF longer and keep most kids harnessed until booster age. Most of the TrueFit covers are a soft, suede-y material with an infant insert that's kind of slick (but Cyrus is old and big enough not to need it and I actually found it kind of a pain for an older baby)

The True Fit *is* a good seat, BUT, there's no such thing as "the best safety ratings" in carseats. All carseats are tested on a pass/fail system. If they're on the shelves, they passed. No one releases reliable comparative data on crash-test performance of carseats.

At Target, I'd get a Marathon or True Fit (I have both and like both for different reasons, but I'm all about a rear-facing tether, and the True Fit doesn't allow rf tethering) and you should be okay with either cover. They're not nasty and nylon-y.

We wound up getting the TrueFit. Thanks for the advice.
