Has anyone rented a car seat from a baby rental place... not the right term of course as they don't rent babies but ykwim!

We have 3 kids- 4, 2, and 4 mo. We' ve travelled with car seats with the older two and it wasn't fun. Travelling with three car seats sounds awful but a little worried about the seats.

The place we are looking at says they check recalls, clean seats w/ organic products, and even have certified people to install.

Thoughts?

My step-MIL wants to get some today and I haven't made up my mind!

I wouldn't. There's no way to know if the seats have been in an accident or mistreated (the baby store doesn't know either unless they have an employee follow the seat around when the rent it out, lol). While another customer had the seat, they could have gotten in an accident with the seat, or left the seat outside for a week in a rainstorm, or washed the straps in bleach. Also, I'd be less concerned about the organic-ness of the cleaning products and more concerned with whether the seats are cleaned according to the manufacturer's instruction. Straps, for example, can only be wiped with mild cleanser. They can't be soaked, even in plain water, as it can weaken them.

So, really, unless you trust the baby shop and every single customer they rent to with your child's life, I wouldn't do it.

No way. Among the other issues listed- they do not guarantee supply. SO, you could get there and they not have seats, then what? I would buy a cheap seat at the destination before I would rent.

So my step-MIL went ahead and booked all three seats anyway. No idea what company or what seats. Not happy. Want to have her unbook them but FIL says they can't and DH doesn't want to make them mad. Errrr... Not sure what I'm going to do now.

I'd bring your own and deal with the fall out, honestly.

Bring your seats anyway and let them waste their money. You shouldn't use rental seats, and just because they spent money already is not a reason to put your children in jeopardy.

Yup yup. Me too. I'd call them and tell them that you plan to bring the seats before hand though. It's not gonna make anyone happy, but maybe they can figure out how to cancel. If not, well, they shouldn't have agreed to the rental without your permission.

So she finally told me the name of the company and I called and canceled one of the seats since we were always planning on bringing at least one. I sent her as nice of an email as I could muster (DH thought I did a great job) thanking her for her time and effort but explaining that I fully research everything in regards to safety. And she sent back a snippy email saying she knows how to do safety research too. I'm sure she is up to date on car seat info and my kids' heights and weights. DH wouldn't let me email her back about that one. He's trying very hard to take the upper road on this one.

So now to work on DH to let us bring the other two seats. I actually have a good friend down there that I can borrow an infant seat from so I think I will do that too. Then it's just DS1's seat I have to work around. Why must there always be family drama! They are my children and I can protect them how I see fit including dragging my own car seats with me so that I can guarantee their safety!

Done ranting.... thank you for understanding! I don't think anyone that I know IRL thinks like you and I do. At least I can come here and know I am normal.
