Talked to dr on Monday about options if I decide I need something to take the edge off of pain. He said vistaril (not sure of spelling) because others like nubain and such would rule out my choice of waterbirth if that's want I wanted.
I looked up vistaril this morning and what I found said it's more for anxiety. Well, I've used Rescue Remedy when I've had anxiety attacks and it works fine for me. Would that be better to use? Do I have any other options, esp natural? I know massage, water, etc but as far as taking something else.

Thanks!

I believe that Rescue Remedy is fine. I know that it is OK in pregnancy and I know my midwife carries some around in her birth kit.

I think it would help if needed.

You may not need anything though. Are you worried?

I've taken Vistoril before (not during pregnancy) and it made me fall asleep. I woke up with one of those woozy hangovers (the kind you get with too much Nyquil) and I didn't like it at all. It's an anti-histimine which doubles for anxiety.

My midwife and my doula both keep Rescue Remedy on-hand, so I'm thinking it's pretty safe. And if you know it works for you, it's probably better!

I'd check out homeopathics, too...especially before you tried something that will cross the placenta with a possibly negative effect on the baby.

Actually, though, I'd suggest hiring a doula. Having a doula in attendance makes it statistically significantly less likely that you'll feel the need for "something else" to take the edge off.

There are plenty of places to look to find a doula, if your're interested, as a start try these sites:

www.alace.org
www.cappa.net
www.findadoula.com
www.dona.com

and if you're poor and don't know how to pay the bills you already have, try here for a free or low cost doula (use the search engine to search by state or it takes FOREVER):

www.bellywomen.net
