I adopted Malachi from the Humane Society when I was 13. She was a beautiful miniature American Eskimo and I fell in absolute LOVE with her when I first saw her. She was such a sweet dog and she was so friendly to everyone. When my sister had a daughter and when I had my oldest son, she was a little wary of the milk-breathed crying things but she never showed any signs of agression, even when they pulled on her ears or threw things at her.
As the years wore on, she slowed down a little bit but was still always eager for a walk, and would twirl on her hind legs for a treat. I always wished I could have put a tutu on her and video tape that. It was darn cute.
The last 6 months of her life were pretty miserable. She started nervously chewing her hair off, she developed some tumors and didn't have the energy to go for walks anymore. She slept a lot but was still friendly to our growing family. The last month she had been steadily worsening, lethargic and not really moving around a lot. We knew she was very ill but the vet only wanted to charge us $200 to euthanize her and would not offer her anything else. We declined, instead choosing to let nature take its course.
6:30 yesterday morning my mom heard a strange yelp from her and then found that she had passed. It was very sudden, it must have been a stroke or heart attack or something.
She passed away on the same bed of blankets she'd slept on for 12 years, in the house she lived in for as long, loved by a family that had never had a dog before.
We'll miss you Malachi. You were a good dog.

I am so very, very, sorry for your loss. She sounds like she had many loving people in her life who will miss her very much. As someone who lost her own 13 yr old dear friend a year ago I can say that it does get easier but there won't be a single day you won't think of her. Eventually, you will smile again and remember her that way. But for now, take care of your broken heart and know that she knew you loved her.
