Hi everyone!

I'm very new to this site. I'm trying to get info on IUDs. I'm getting Paragard on Monday. My honeybear is 7 1/2 weeks old.

One of the serious side effects of any IUD is perforation. Does anyone know about this? How do you know if your uterus is being perforated? Are you unable to conceive if this happens?

I've read some good and not so good things with IUDs, but I'm willing to deal with the heavy periods. I was lucky before Ezekiel was born by only having a period for 2 days.

Also, if we wait 2 years to have another baby, will baby #1 be jealous of baby #2?

According to this, the risk of perforation with a Pargard is 1 in 1,360.

As to what happens when it perforates, conception chances in the future, etc. - I am not sure. I'd ask your dr.

As for your last q - some kids are jealous of the new baby, some are not. In my case, my kids were not jealous of the next one to come along.

I am also new to the site and registered just so I can let EVERYONE know that uterine perforation does happen...it happened to me! I had the Paragard copper T for almost four years without a hitch until I went to have it removed so I could get pregnant. The doctor couldnt find the strings...leading to x-rays and sonograms trying to find it and figure out where it went. I then had Laproscopic surgery to remove it and the dr. said it was stuck to my pelvic side wall and that my left fallopian tube was dialated. No one has any idea how and why it did this or if I will ever become pregnant since I obviously havent already and believe me we werent careful...we had no reason to be, so we thought. Now Paragard either doesnt want to answer my questions or cant because they just dont know why. I am currently trying to contact the FDA to get some answers. Anyone else having had this problem? If so can you say Class Action??? Like I said I liked it while I had it until I found that something went terribly wrong.

iudnot4me,
I'm sorry that happened to you
You know that when you get an IUD, you have to sign a consent form? When I got mine I was given a patient information packet and I was required to read it before I signed saying that I read and understood. It is really unfortunate to be that one person out of more than 1000 that something happens to. But it is one of the risks. Many types of birth control that are not Natural Family Planning carry risks, it is up to the person using them to determine if the risks are ones they are willing to accept. I hope it doesn't sound harsh for me to say this, but I don't believe that a lawsuit is really in order if you read and understood the risks of the IUD and then consented to having one. It sounds like at the time of getting it you were willing to accept that risk.

ITA- I signed a consent with both IUds ( Ive had Mirena and I have paragard now) It is a risk you take.

I must have signed something and the way the drs. try to quickly get you in and out I must not have read the info and just signed it. Live and learn...I will definately READ any info presented to me next time especially if it has to do with my body. I do wish the risks where presented to the patient better. The more common risks are noted and explained better but because this is RARE and a SERIOUS COMPLICATION (infact very rare) it is not well explained and not presented where the SIDE EFFECTS are listed. This is not side effect but a serious complication of. FDA needs to reconsider the product or make more apparent the serious risks. I think the percent they report is a lot higher than reported. Don't get me wrong I loved the product before all this mess. I still think it is a great form of birth control if all goes well and the product stays where it is suppose to be. No one can explain to me if the migration of the Paragard into my pelvic cavity and embedding into my pelvic side wall was caused by the insertion itself or through spontainious migration. This is my unanswered question. If I can obtain this answer I be more at peace with everything that has happened. I cant understand how the IUD penetrates the uterus all by itself????Any answers.
