I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this? A couple of months ago my son was put on it. But recently he has been having trouble buttoning his pants. I am so bummed because I had bought him a bunch of nice Gap jeans and pants (He has to have the hook/eye closure and we can't find anyone else who does this!)

Anyhow, this morning after ANOTHER pair went into the sell-it pile because they were too tight, I had him get on the scale. The boy has gained 10 lbs in a few months! Is this something I should call his dr about? That just seems like wHOOOOOaaa to me... that is a lot of weight! That is 20% of what he weighed before

Anyone else have experience with this?

It's a very well known side effect of Risperdal. My son doesn't take it, but I know many kids and adults who do.

Daily excercise, like a 15 minute walk even f it's freezing, lots of filling but low calorie foods (sometimes sensory issues can make that REALLY difficult, but carrots, celery, high fiber foods, etc)

Some people find that it stops being such an issue after time, and as far as I know Risperdal has the less weight gain associated with it when compared to the other atypicals... but still, a big deal.

Our son took it for a while and gained 2 lbs in the first month. He is 5 and now weighs about 50 lbs, he is heavy and I cannot even pick him up. He was 42 lbs when he started. It didn't help so we took him off of it and theyt next med made him eat and eat.

Best wishes to you. I do not have a magic answer.

Take care!

Yes Risperdal almost always causes weight gain. It actually isnt the least of the atypical antipsychotics in terms of weight gain. Zyprexa is the worst but Risperdal is the second or third. Abilify and Geodon supposedly don't have weight gain as a side effect. My son was just put on risperdal two days ago. He is on a really low dose (0.25 mg a day) and we don't know if it will help or not. But if he starts gaining lots of weight I will be taking him off of it. Risperdal is also linked to metabolic syndrome and diabetes which is part of the weight gain so if the weight keeps going up I would ask for a blood sugar tests frequently.
