Have you seen it? If you haven't you might not want to read - little bit of a spoiler.

We just saw it again last night. There is a part where the father is building his new son. He has to put the boy piece on since he almost forgot. He takes a hammer and says, "This may hurt a bit" or something like that. He hammers the part on and the baby wails and has that look on his face like "what did you just do to me?!" The first time I saw it, it was funny. The 2nd time I saw it, I realized that I think they were equating it to circ. "New baby boys have to get their "boy parts" hurt." I know it's just a movie, but that part really ticked me off. It hit me like a slap in the face. Seriously, if they had had a girl robot in the movie instead, they wouldn't have had a joke like that.

Did anyone else see it that way when you watched it? Maybe I missed something? Anyway, I did really enjoy the rest of the movie.

Wow... that's pretty... disturbing! Though I don't watch TV or many new movies so there are probably more disturbing things around that I don't know about
Bah... societal norms make me sick!

love and peace.

I don't remember that part specifically. I wonder if it was just supposed to hurt because in America we think its funny when men get hit in the junk.

yeah that's what i was thinking. (remembering the part in Shrek when they are trying to escape the dragon, and Shrek slides down the pipe - or whatever it is - carrying Fiona and donkey and... :: wham ::

I know I tend to jump to conclusions due to my involvement with this issue. The writer may not have intended any connection at all. Guess where my brain goes when I hear words like "circumstantial," "circumspect" or "circumscribe?" Yep, even though the context has nothing to do with this issue, it immediately goes to circumcision!

Haven't seen it, but from the description, I would guess that it really was just in the line of "man gets hit in crotch with ball," which is apparently supposed to be one of the funniest things possible. If they had been going for a circ joke, I think he would have been removing, not hammering on. Plus, if you think about the majority of circ joke scenes in movies, it probably would have involved a robot dressed like an Orthodox rabbi and speaking with a heavy accent.

Of course, the humor of hitting a baby in the genitals also escapes me...

Oh yeah, I know it could have been ,"hehe, he got hit really hard in the genitals, yuk, yuk." "Those guys and their delicate equipment."

I just hate how normal hurting a new baby in the genital region is in our society that it is able to be a joke, even if it's not even related to circ. Yes, I know that both being hit there and circ have been the butt of many jokes in movies and TV.

I mean they could have just left the joke at, "Uh, you did want a boy, right?" When the piece was first forgotten. What is funny about the baby wailing and looking sooooo upset from daddy hammering on his nether regions? Maybe if you haven't seen a circ(on video or IRL) and know how a baby wails, you won't associate them. I guess most of society would see it as he just got whacked really hard. (eta
know most of the people on this board have seen the video or a circ IRL, I was talking about the rest of society that is in the dark.)

I'm sooo not one to read things into movies, books, etc. I'm usually the one saying shut up and just enjoy the movie, book, whatever. It just stopped my laugh(from the missing part joke) cold when it happened. I was just wondering if anyone else felt that. I guess not.

I definitely didn't mean to make you feel all alone, and I'm sure the other posters didn't, either. I was trying to cheer you up!
Like I said, I haven't seen the movie, so I don't actually know what I'd feel seeing the scene, but I've certainly had those sort of feelings of "How could they think this is funny?!?" about other things, and it's definitely tough to hear other people laughing at something you find disturbing. I hope the next movie you see is a lot better!

I read a review on Robots ( I think it was focus on the family's movie site) and they were describing the violence, etc. in the movie, and one part was the penis part. They equated it with circumcision, as well, so it's not just you, OP!

re: the ubiquitous media whack in the nuts.

well, this may be tmi info for some of you, but the question was asked, so i will answer it. 'why do they show it, as it is not that funny?' (skip this post, if you really do not want to know of such things.)

ok. now say, remember a time, an innocent time. the 60s (yes :LOL comparatively.)
'the avengers' comes on. oh boy! emma peel! is not diana rigg fabulous? and is not diana rigg resplendant in a leather catsuit, tightly hogtied? are teenage boys not getting extremely turned on, in ther most sexually impressionable years?

flash forward: these same boys are making movies, in the 70s & 80s. wow, lots of kidnapping. suddenly, bondage is everywhere on the mystery movie of the week, etc. now here we are in the next millenia, and teenage girls are wearing posture collars and rubber in 'vogue'. the piercings unique to the fetish subculture are now cool teenage accessories. bondage has been MAINSTREAMED.

now, kids later on, they were watching 'america's funniest home videos.' guess what *they* were getting aroused watching? kristy mcnichol in 'the pirate movie'. helen slater in 'legend of billie jean.' all nutwhackers (or, 'ballbusters', as it is known amongst aficionados.)

so, if you wonder where all the incessant media genital abuse is coming from, i would say the kids who got off on those scenes in earlier movies, whereas it spread like a virus (as per my theory regarding the mainstreamization of bondage gear.) it is still in process, which is why some of us are still shaking our heads & saying, "huh?"

(there is a chance that it subconsciously refers to the american penchant for victimizing infant boys' genitals, but that doesn't explain the deep fascination for it within japanese porn culture. but that could be an offshoot of the american fetish as anime sprang from osamu tezuka seeing 'bambi' and getting all inspired. explaining japanese porn is beyond my abilities at this time.)

there is material for a dissertation in here somewhere... :LOL

there ya go!

I know there are a lot of smarter people than me out there, but I can't imagine anyone being able to explain Japanese porn!

anyone seen this movie?

http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id...f=info&intl=us

There is a part about circing the natives or something, its been a while since I have seen it, its a stupid movie anyway, but I got so mad we turned it off and I was aggrivated for days.

I know there very well may be tribes out there somewhere that for some nutty reason may circ, ( but I would totally believe it if there werent as well, just dont want to say there absolutely is not if there is, I am not an anthropologist) but what that movie was trying to say without a doubt, is that circ is so "normal" that these suposed totally wild tribe members do it to their children.

WHAT A CROCK OF SH!T.

thank you, I feel better for havING vented.

stupid movie...

edit spelling.

Stella, I have seen that, but I saw it before I knew anything about circ. I guess I shouldn't see it now, since I'm sure I would get pi$$ed.

Thanks ozzyemm. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that thought that.

I only scanned the messages so sorry if someone already said this...

Could it be possible that the scene is a subtle way to speak out about circumcising? The circumciser who is completely oblivious to the baby's very real and very obvious pain?

Just a thought!

I don't know what the writers were going for, but it was all so quick and wrapped up in a joke that I doubt the message would have time to get through, kwim? I think the most someone would take from it is, "aww poor baby." I think a LOT of circing parents know it hurts. They just think the hurt is justified, like a heel stick for PKU.
