Hi everybody, I'm new at almost everything these days... this forum, being pregnant myself, the place I live(rochester, ny)... So thanks to everyone who's been posting all over this homebirth forum, it's been really, really helpful reading all these posts as I plan my birth experience.
So, my story...
My husband and I moved to Rochester about a year ago, from Philadelphia. We have always wanted a homebirth, and in Philly, NBD there are tons of midwives and we knew so many people(we were both born and raised there and all of both our families are there)... I have worked with horses(and every other kind of critter) for most of my life, and have been from conception through birth and most of the first few years of life for a great number of horses, dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs etc etc etc... i guess what i'm getting at is that birth for me is nothing new, but it's my first time actually being the one pushing. I'm feeling very calm about my ability to do this, and look forward to being able to deepen my knowledge and skills through this experience.
However... the problem I'm having is this: There is exactly ONE midwife in Rochester that does homebirths. Her name is Meg Grindrod, she seemed nice enough on the phone(my 1st appointment is tomorrow) but I am not thrilled to have such limited choices. What if we don't get along?
Does anyone know a midwife within driving distance of Rochester that does homebirths and would be willing to see us, just so we have some options? I have no problem with "lay" midwives, or direct entry.
Anyone else out there in this area have a homebirth? Anyone out there know this midwife or use her services before? Sorry to go on and on... I look forward to all your responses!
Thanks!

P.s. I almost forgot... am am in week 13 of my pregnancy, so we have a little time to plan, here.

welcome to western NY! i am near batavia, ny--just west of you. there is another midwife who is i think near the PA line who comes up this way to do HBs. I am drawing a blank on her name now though..,....AGH! excuse the pregnant brain here! when I remember, i will let you know. also there is a Homebirth Circle that meets once a month in Rochester. I can get some info if you are interested. i am using a midwife from Buffalo but I don't believe she will travel that far since Meg is there. best of luck and hope your appointment goes well!!

I'm just west of Batavia!!! (I'm just off the thruway, exit 48A! )

There were absolutely NO homebirth midwives around, when I was looking almost 2 years ago..but I found an awesome "underground" one!
There was "Meg (mw) in Rochester area, but I'm not sure if she's still practicing?
Meg was my midwife, and I LOVE her!!! She was great, in every way. I wanted a midwife who would respect me and my choices, and she definitely did. She, to me, is really representative of what a midwife should be.

Thanks to everyone for your help in the midwife search. I thought I'd update and say "yes please" to everyone who offered to send contact info as they got hold of it for other midwives.
I wanted to say also that I met with Meg Grindrod today and have got absolutely no qualms about using her. She was terrific, and our visit with her was everything I had hoped my other pregnancy checkups would have been and more. I really feel comfortable with her, and I (so far) wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone else out there who wants to do a homebirth.
Thanks again, everyone!

Hi,
My name is Kim & I also live in the Rochester area (about 1/2 South East.) I'm 12 wks. & Meg is my midwife also. I was a little nervous too about not having any choices but so far I am THRILLED with her. I have my 3rd appointment today. I'm due Oct 13th with my 1st baby. It makes me even more confident to hear all the wonderful things being said about her. She put me very much at ease all on her own but hearing the opinions of women who have worked with her gives me that much more of a positive feeling towards her experience.

Would love to hear more about how everyone is doing. I've been lucky so far, no morning sickness, just a little tired in the beginning. We just started telling family the past few days and I've gotten a VERY negative response so I'm trying to work through that (This was an unplanned pregnancy and even though I've been with my partner for about 4 years we are not married so everyone is flipping out.) We havent told his parents yet..... thats probably tonight and I am NOT looking forward to it.

How's everyone else doing?

Kim

I am using Jen Bozza as my midwife right now, she's amazing! So if for whatever reason you don't like Meg, (I'm sure ya will!) Jen would be a great person to get in touch with

Hi Ladies! I've been searching through old threads trying to find some info from Rochester area mommas, and I came across this discussion... I'm replying in hopes that some of you are still around and will chime in! We are moving to Rochester next month and I need a pediatrician for my three kiddos.

I'm looking for someone who is knowledgable about the intact penis, won't give us a hard time about never getting a flu shot, is supportive of alternatives to traditional medicines and treatments, won't push antibiotics right away, etc.

I hope some of you are still around and will have a suggestion or two for me ... Thank you!!

what about homebirth midwives in Buffalo? I'm sort of between Buff and Roch, but further south and definitely interested in options!
