My DD is 2 weeks old today.

And if I hadn't stood there and watched it happen, I simply would not have believed it was possible, but DD rolled over today...from her tummy to her back.

I had just changed her diaper. She was laying on my bed--the flat part of it (we have a hump in the mattress in the middle, but she was laying on my side of the bed where it is flat and there is no incline to give her a little advantage in flipping over).

But she sure did. Just twisted her little self until she was on her back...She even looked surprised at the change of scenery!

She's a strong baby. Has been pushing herself up on her arms for a week now, and holds her head of high for long periods of time and can rest her head back down without flopping down on her face. So, I guess I shouldn't be alarmed that she's rolling over already?

I mean, isn't it too early for that kind of thing?

DS did this at a month, twice. And then not for many months after that! My friends baby did the same thing, I think it's pretty common. My baby book says I rolled from front to back at 8 days, actually. It's that heavy little head!

My four month old, who has, like your baby, always been very strong, did the same thing at only a few weeks of age, but it was an accident. If they've got enough strength to turn that big giant head, the rest of their little body will follow. He'd roll over accidentally, look surprised and stunned, repeat the move a few times, then completely forget how to do it. It was so funny! And like you said, surprising, and a little alarming as well.

I bet when her body gets a little bigger, she'll stop being able to roll over for a few months. It's only now that my babe is four months that he's getting the coordination required to turn himself over intentionally, but he still can't make it all the way every time.

Some babies are strong like that.

My baby rolled over twice when she was two weeks old, and then didn't do it again until six weeks or so.

Just remember not to flip out if she doesn't do it again tomorrow. My daughter would "hit" a milestone (she took her first steps a few times at just over 9mos), but then not do it again for a while (she only started doing it again a couple of weeks ago). Makes for a lot of waiting...b/c you KNOW she can do it, but she WON'T when your camera's on

My ds did that too - we couldn't believe he could roll over so early. But then, he didn't do it again for a long time after that and we figured it was a fluke.

Who knows, though, every child develops on their own schedule. My friend's son was walking well at 9 months! You just never know...

DS rolled over on the day he was born! What a shocker! I was changing his diaper in the hospital, stepped away for a second to get something and....
he had flipped from his back to his front. Everyone told me your second is easier because you know they won't go anywhere. Not in this case. Matthew's been rolling regularly from his front to his back since he was a week old and from his back to his front since he was 1 1/2 months. He's 4 1/2 months now and gets up on all fours. He gets all around the house by getting up and crawling with his legs. We've caught him getting his arms moving too this week, so think he'll be full out crawling very soon!

Yeah, my dd did that at 7 days old. She could roll both ways....we had to put a crib separater in with her and her twin because she kept rolling on him....she was tiny though....4 pounds when we brought her home so all she had to do was turn her little head and the rest of her body would roll over.....it lasted about 3 weeks.....once she started getting bigger she couldn't do it anymore.

DS has been rolling in both directions almost ever day since he was 2 weeks too. He's 1 month tomorrow. It is prett freaky. My DD was an early learner for everything too, but she didn't roll over until 2 months.

Mine was the same ... a dedicated side-sleeper who sometimes, in the effort to get on his side, would wind up on his belly, and for a while seemed to like trying to repeat the feat. Now, at a month old, it still happens accidentally but he seems pretty disinterested in working on it intentionally.

As a month old mother, I've pretty much caught onto the fact that the "they'll do this at this age" charts make better kindling than guidelines.

My fourth, now 6.5 months old, flipped from front to back in the recovery room after my c-section. I thought I was hallucinating or something, but sure enough, she could flip front to back from the day she was born. She'd do it pretty much any time you put her on her tummy for the first two months or so.

She rolled purposefully from back to tummy at almost exactly 3 months.

Sitting...that's another story. All of my other three were sitting well by 5-6 months. This one...not so much. She can scooch around though, going about 2-3 feet and very proud of herself. Apparently she thinks sitting is for babies who don't want to go anywhere.

My baby did that at 10 days old. He didn't pick up other physical skills exceptionally early or anything, he was just a really strong chunky guy. Luckily back to front tends to take more coordination, so they usually can't get *too* far

Like many others, DS did that a few times in the first few weeks. He's 3.5 months old now and is just starting to intentionally roll from his back to his side, then stop and go from his side to his belly. It's as if he has to think about it, and he does best when people say, "Come on!" and encourage him. I guess he thinks it's not worth showing off if no one's looking! LOL!
