My daughter has been sick for the last four days. Extreme vomiting every hour on Friday, no vomiting on Saturday but a really high fever and very lethargic, Sunday she threw up three times and still had a high fever and was still very lethargic, now it's Monday and she has diarrhea but is acting better kind of and can drink liquids now. We took her to the ER last night because she started shrieking and wouldn't stop, so we wanted to rule out meningitis or at least have someone else reasure us that she was fine. They diagnosed her with rotovirus and said her body should heal itself fine. They also said that the whole peds unti was full of kids, all with rotovirus. Does it sound like rotovirus to you? Wouldn't she have been sicker or had diarrhea sooner? Is this a way for them to convince everyone to get the vax, by diagnosing every upset stomach as rotovirus?

Btw - it was freaky, the hospital was so cool about us not vaxing. Our doctor was even talking about how if more people breastfeed, a lot of those kids upstairs wouldn't even be as sick (they had no idea whether or not we breastfeed). Very cool hospital

When ds #1 was about 10 months old, we all had rotavirus. What you described sounds like what we went through. We never went in to a dr, but there was a rotavirus outbreak in our area. Keep washing your hands, hopefully you won't get it too!

I promise I'm not stalking you.... Question....did they do a culture on her stool to check for Rota or are they guessing? What does her poop look/smell like? Rota has a definite smell/look GROSS!
Rota also can last 10 days or so....usually starts with vomiting and then goes to diarrhea....it sounds like it's a definite probability...it's super common among little ones and honestly you probably had it already as a kid so not to worry...(you most likely wont get it )
Maybe you could make her some good homemade chicken noodle soup .....good for rehydration and strength.....good luck....keep me posted

except for the shrieking, it sounds like when my dd had rotavirus at 15 months. She vomited in the a.m. mostly for a couple of days and had a good fever (never temped it so I don't know how high) and then the diarrhea started. Total time sick was about 5 or 6 days with the worst being days 3-4. Luckily she did bf well the whole time - that's about all she did. Dh got it too and was down for about 2 days.

it definately sounds like rota! there is a distinct smell. very acid-smelling and horrible.

i worked for a pediatrician for several years, and the first illness i got at his office was rotavirus. wash your hands alot! you definately dont want it. i am told it is way worse in adults. i believe it!! it came on me like a ton of bricks while i was at work. i spent 3 hours in the bathroom at the office on the toilet with a trashcan in my lap. i was trapped there with diarrhea and vomiting. i couldnt even drive the 10 miles to my house for fear i would poop all over the place!! it lasted a total of 5 days. i lost 7 pounds. it is the only time in my life i can remember wanting to die!

that said, the office i worked for actually doesn't offer the rotavirus vaccine because to them (a very mainstream practice) the risks outweigh the benefits!

my advice to you... put everything possible through the dishwasher, throw away all the toothbrushes in your house (buy new ones ), wash all the clothes, everyone get in the shower, and then pray that nobody else gets it!

good luck to you!

Melaya - That sounds exactly like what my DS has. I thought he was getting better yesterday when he didn't throw up though he did still have the fever and was lethargic. Then the explosive diarrhea started today, I don't think my couch will ever recover.

Can someone try to explain what rotavirus poop smells like? Yeah, I know, gross question.

I'm pretty sure my ds has it right now.
The smell just...brings tears to your eyes...it's fumy. And nauseating.
Actually, it was the worst the first couple of days. All I can guess is that maybe it's the smells of all his floral bacteria being flushed?

I didn't catch it, so I'm guessing he just gave me a free naturopathic rotavirus booster.

Rotton eggs!! That's what the poo smells like. I'm convinced that dd had it two weeks ago. And, we're all fine now
