So I wrote letters to the council and mayor in both Chandler and Tucson, as requested in this thread: <a href="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=360855" target="_blank">http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=360855</a><br><br>
My letters went like this, with the appropriate town's name:<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">
<div class="smallfont" style="margin-bottom:2px;">Quote:</div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">Dear Mayor and Council,<br>
As a mother who has often in the past chosen to vacation in Arizona, I urge you to vote in favor of the ordinance protecting a mother and child's right to breastfeed anytime, anywhere. This is of such importance to me. I will be watching to see whether you make it worth my while to consider a visit to Tucson, or if perhaps a breastfeeding-friendly state like California might be a better place to spend our hard-earned money! Breastfeeding is not indecent or offensive; it is the loving, natural way to feed a child. Please stand up for breastfeeding mothers!<br><br>

</tr></table></div>
Pretty standard, right? I got nice responses from Chandler.<br><br>
Tonight, I got a terse reply from a woman named Carol, who does not identify her position in Tucson's government. She said, Thanks for your message. Atlanta is far away from Tucson.<br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/angry.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="angry"> I can only think of one way to take this- she's basically saying she doesn't give a flip what I think!<br><br>
I wrote this back to her:<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">
<div class="smallfont" style="margin-bottom:2px;">Quote:</div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">So it is. Was that just a general observation, or were you trying to imply that I should have no interest in what goes on in Tucson? If, as I suspect, it's the latter, I have to laugh at your insularity. As you may know, one can travel across the country in mere hours these days! Does it really not matter to you that a potential visitor would choose to spend her money elsewhere, on the basis of Tucson appearing unfriendly to breastfeeding mothers? Your city must have a very strong economy, to risk turning away tourists with sarcastic e-mails.<br><br>
I assure you, there are many who feel strongly about this issue.<br><br>
Good luck improving your image,<br>
Kristi P.</td>

I googled her. She is a council member. How unprofessional. <i>Her husband is a pediatrician.</i> They have 4 children and 11 grandchildren, but I guess mothers' rights are of no concern to her.

Wow, google is scary sometimes!<br><br>
lessons learned - don't be flip in your emails - especially if you have any kind of public (or internet!) profile.<br><br>
BTW, loved your response.

I have had the pleasure <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink"> of speaking to councilmember West via the phone recently on this issue. She had a lot to say. She is absolutley NOT in support of any language anywhere to protect breastfeeding children and mothers.<br><br>
Kristi your reply was GREAT! Unfortunately I see she has not stopped her curt and quite rude email responses. A mother here in Tucson has had a similar email conversation with her. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/nut.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="nut"> You would think a public SERVANT would know how to better respond to public inquiries! Unfortunately she is not up for re-election next month. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">

here is my letter to them...<br><br>
I encourage the Mayor and Council to continue to respond to the emails regarding protecting breastfeeding in public. I also encourage the Mayor and Council to remember when responding that they are corresponding with intelligent, educated, and thoughtful citizens, and to respond in kind to the inquiries. What does it say to the greater public when a member of our city council replies with curt one liners and rude intonations? Please consider the image you, as the representatives of Tucson, are potraying to the rest of the country.<br><br>
Thank You,<br>

This is interesting - I wrote and received a response as well (from west)..here is what I sent...<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">
<div class="smallfont" style="margin-bottom:2px;">Quote:</div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">I am writing, o strongly encourage you to pass an ordinace allowing moms to have the right to breastfeed ANYWHERE that they have the right to be. It is crucial that you do not discriminate against moms that are choosing to follow every major medical association's recommendations and give the best possible start to their babies.<br><br>
In 2003 there were 156,353 participants in the AZ WIC program. The cost of formula is, from the cheapest brand, $3000 per year, to the most expensive brand, $6000 per year. If we could encourage 70% of the total WIC participants to breastfeed their baby our state would save between $328,341,300 and $656,682,000 per year!!!! By discouraging moms from nursing in public there is no way we can even come close to that number. Forget about the cost in health care that would be saved! A mom who does not feel welcome (or is not welcome) to nurse her babies in public will more than likely stop nursing her child sooner than a mom who is very welcome to feed her baby in public.<br><br>
I frequently visit business establishments in Tucson (my husband is a UofA grad with friends and family in the area - but I guarantee, long after my last baby has stopped nursing I will NEVER spend a sinlge penny in your city, if the council chooses to exculde nuring moms and their babies from the same places that others have the right to be.<br><br>
If you do choose to pass such a laughable ordinance - I expect you to immediatly pass legislation to require all young men, and over weight guys to wear a belt that holds up their pants so that I am not subjected to seeing their boxers, or worse, their plumber's crack. As I am offended by that.<br><br>
Pass legislation to PROTECT Arizona moms and babies - not one that HURTS them.</td>

And I received 2 emails back from her...<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">

<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">Is Mesa going to do this? I bet not.</td>

It sounds like she is nutso.<br><br>
Why not tell her the mayor in Atlanta could run an election campaign for her seat on the council defeating her by solely using her emails as campaign adds against her....or in Mesa for that matter...<br><br>
What a moron.<br><br>
I'll take her email and disperse it among our former UofA colleagues and friends....

What an angry, bitter woman!! And I'm blown away at how unprofessional that it!! She's an elected official, a representative of her area and yet she speaks like she's a private citizen you're randomly choosing to annoy with emails. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">: It's the TOURISM, stupid!!! Talk about a provincal view!!

I know this may not be the best idea but is there anyway you can go public with the letters? People need to know how rude this lady is. Perhaps the newspaper or local tv station. I just can't beleive her responses.

I agree with mommy2boys--whether or not she supports the legislation, her response is totally inappropriate. I would definitely send your letters and her responses to the local papers or at least to the other council members. That's appalling!

Great idea! I'm off to find contacts for the news media in Tucson....unless anyone has them already! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">

Oh! I forgot to add this another email I had received from her after I sent my 1st letter!

And then I wrote...<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">

<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">I couldn't agree with you more! I am so thankful that I have never been asked to "do that somewhere else" - even though I'm a confident mom - who has nursed 2 kiddos - I would feel incredibly intimidated if I was asked to leave, or worse, have my child eat in the bathroom. It's funny, my 12 year old son, who is at that age where anything to do with women's bodies is considered "gross", can't understand what the big deal is about. "Afterall," he says, "that's the way babies are supposed to be fed."<br>
Have a great day-<br>

Her 1st response seemed pretty friendly - short, but friendly - whish is why her next two emails through me off. Looking back now - I guess she was being sarcastic.<br><br>
Any ideas what to say regarding that last email from her (the one syaing she knows my mayor)??

With all those rude responses I couldn't help but be snarky. Something along the lines of "Well my dear, I can see you aren't in charge of public relations for your fine town. I don't believe "Come see the bitchiest woman on earth" would be a strong draw for your fine town. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="innocent">

Here's my letter I just sent off:<br>
Dear Mayor and Council,<br><br>
As a breastfeeding mom and frequent visitor and worker in Tuscon, I urged your city to follow the example of Chandler and make breastfeeding legal wherever and whenever a baby is hungry. It seems like such a common sense issue to feed a baby without having to "hide" in a bathroom or hot car. It's amazing how backwards are society is when it's actually a debate on a mother breastfeeding when a baby is hungry. I hope the council can see how ridicules this is and moves to protect nursing moms. If for some reason the council does not, I will not set foot in Tucson again. Working in the movie industry as an actor as well as crew, I can make sure we find other locations to film. Breastfeeding is an amazing power and no one should feel ashamed to feed their baby.<br><br>
Sincerely,<br>
