A friend of mine stepped on a really long rusty nail that went really deep...and it's really rusty. What are the chances of him contracting tetanus? It's been 2 years since I researched tetanus and the vaccine so I've forgotten since, all I remember is that I learned enough to say NO to the vaccine for my son. haha

My understanding is that one of the major ways tetanus is transmitted is through animal feces--farm animals, to be exact. So, the connection with getting cut on metal or rusty metal comes from the days of farmers being the ones who would primarily face those risks of stepping on a nail or getting cut on a plow with manure/fertilizer on it. So, unless your friend thinks the nail may have encountered cow or sheep poop, I think it would be fine. I remember a thread similar to this a while ago and the consensus was: "no farm animal poop, don't worry!" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">
