S/O: Fun and free dates

the other fun and free post made me think of this:

My husband and I went out for his birthday not too long ago on a saturday night. I had a cold and wasn't feeling up to bars or loud music, not that I care for those much anyway. We could barely think of things to do, especially since it was cold outside. So, we went out to eat and to an arcade.

What are some good ideas for a date night that is on the cheaper or free side?

~Go for a walk around the block or a hike. We've enjoyed a walk around our closest city at night when everything is closed, we looked into store windows, held hands and also went to the top of the parking garage and looked out over the city.
~We've also enjoyed ourselves when just the two of us went out for ice cream and ate it in the car.
~back when we were really poor, dh would take some of his weekly allowance and buy a six pack of beer, and after the kids were in bed, we'd drink our beers and watch a favorite tv show. This was a weekly standing date for years.
My ideas are:
~Hike and a picnic
~Spooky cemetery stroll
~Read a book to each other while sipping wine on the couch
~Redbox free rental or library movie and some homemade popcorn.
~Ghost hunting ( we like to look up haunted places in our city and go visit them. Even if we chicken out, it's still fun. lol)
~Nice dinner that we make together at home ( budgeted in of course, but I like to have salmon and kale and mashed potatoes for this one. lol) after the kids are in bed
My husband and I love to walk along our Riverwalk and have a picnic, too. Unfortunately we don't get out often without our LO, because we have no family in this town. The closest ones live an hour and fifteen minutes away. BUT -- it's still fun.

I thought of a very frugal one. If you have someone to watch the kids for free you could always go to a plasma place and give plasma for money.
I was thinking about a friend who is very short on cash and thought about her and her dh donating plasma, and then thought of this thread. You could just kinda hang out, talk, whatever while you're giving the plasma and then use the money you make for a dinner or a movie or something.

We like walks, hikes and picnics, and we get movies from the lilbrary and have a movie night. We also like to turn errands into fun dates when we can, though this doesn't work for everyone. For example- we've been doing our christmas shopping lately, so one afternoon we might have my mom watch ds, and dh and I will go to the mall, and get a cup of coffee and stroll around chatting and looking at all the decorations. We'll buy the one or two presents we need there, and maybe look around to see if there's anything we want to add to our wish list. Sometimes we go to a restuarant later in the evening after we've already had dinner at home and get coffee and a dessert to share. Some of the parks around here have free concerts in the summer, and the shopping malls sometimes have musical performances in the winter-usually holiday music. We take our own food/drinks so we don't have to buy anything there.
My sweet husband and I hired a sitter and spent a lovely day fixing the toilet.

Just he and I....puttering around the hardware store...we bought a $2 wax ring and went home and fixed the toilet.

A hot, steamy shower later and it was officially a date.

We like:
lots of walking and hiking together
movies from the library or borrowed from friends
reading fun children's books to each other at the library
dress rehersal of a play at the local theater for free
eating ice cream in the car

For our 10th anniversary, we dropped the kids at my sister's and went hiking. We were gone all day, and it was so fabulous to hike without all of the, "are we done yet?" and "I'm tired!" comments we usually get.

We also do a lot of watching movies/DVDs while consuming adult beverages. But honestly, we don't like the really cheap alcohol, so it would probably be cheaper to go out for fast food

Speaking of which, I've found that going out to lunch with DH at the sandwich place is just as much fun as going to the upscale restraunt down the street. Maybe even more fun, because we get to snuggle next to each other in a booth

We do a lot of lunch dates. I trade babysitting with a friend- one Monday she takes my kids, the next Monday I take her kids. On my free days I usually meet DH for lunch and run errands. It's nice not needing to pay for a mother's helper or babysitter to have a free day.

We like to go to Barnes and Noble. We walk around looking and reading a bit and then sit in the cafe part and have a coffee and a treat of some kind and talk.

A good at home date on a friday night is to make a "fun" dinner just for us after the kids are in bed. Something like a bunch of appetizer things (wings, egg rolls, etc.). We eat in on tray tables and watch a movie. Oh, and there has to be ice cream.

Yes! We do this! I'm super strict about eating in the living room, but occasionally I'll get a couple comforters and spread them on the carpet (in case of spills) and then we'll have fun appetizers and soda and junk and watch a movie together while ds is in bed. It's so fun, especially because we only ever eat in the kitchen or dining room.

For us a great date is our favorite comfort dinner-- chicken cutlets and mashed potatoes and peas and fresh baked rolls. Then, a bottle of wine and some old episodes of The Office.

Or, go out to breakfast/brunch on Saturday morning (still cheaper than going out to dinner) then stroll around Soho and the East Village for the rest of the day and stop whereever catches our fancy, which is usually a street fair in the summer and American Apparel and some shoe stores.

Right now, DH and I would...

Drive around looking at Christmas lights with a thermos of hot cocoa brought from home.

Play in the snow (if we're lucky enough to have any)

Lay in front of the fire and watch The Office (hi Altair!)

Go ice-skating (watching my DH TRY to skate is amazing entertainment)

Go window shopping (or actual Christmas shopping) at the mall. We're people watchers. Plus, I love walking around while holding hands -

Play games by candle-light or lantern-light (yes, we do this).

Eat at home and then go out for dessert

If you know someone with an Entertainment Book, you can ask for some of their BOGO coupons to places that you and dh like to go.
