S/O to DTD and BCP malfunction...How did you end up with YOUR surprise?

1507 Views 15 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  SunShineSally
Just curious - there is another thread that is about being pg and not being impressed by it- and sooooooooooo many of us responded that we have 'surprises' and many of us in the same boat.

So - HOW did YOU end up with your surprise babe??

I have one conceived on Alesse BCP while breastfeeding and one conceive with condoms.

HOW does a condom fail if you don't see anything obvious about it???

AF came back at 9 mo PP but after that one cycle, I didn't have clear ovulation symptoms. So at 13 mo PP I started using the inexpensive ovulation tests you get online and discovered that I was ovulation on day 23-25 of my cycle (I've always had long cycles but not usually that long). I conceived 15 mo PP. It was the first cycle I had clear ovulation symptoms and I ovulated on day 18 of my cycle. It was DH's birthday....I thought we'd be fine and we'd just be careful after that (thinking I had another 7-9 days until O)--but I O'd 3 days later

I've always wondered how condoms fail! The only thing I've ever come up with is if the guy doesn't hold into the base of the condom when pulling out, or doesn't do this RIGHT AFTER he finishes, it can slip off and leak. But I know of (many) cases where a woman got pregnant and they used them correctly.

I got pregnant using FAM, but I didn't use it correctly. I was just going by previous cycles, where I was consistently ovulating on day 14-15 of a 27-28 day cycle. We had sex on day 8 and 16, thinking we had avoided my fertile time. Obviously we didn't.

See, that's the only thing we can come up with too - likely the latter.....

Well I was using Cycle Beads with this pregnancy. We DTD on the last brown bead at the beginning of my cycle. Since that was our last option for BC, dh is getting snipped now. The beads served us well for five + years, but we can't chance it happening twice.

We DTD the unprotected about 9 days before I expected O, then again a good 5-6? before expected O date which was unprotected for the first half, but we used a condom when it counts most, which we always do, so effectively so that we are comfortable using that method even on ovulation day...

So, early ovulation? I wasn't charting, so I can't say for certain... except that of the 9/12 months I had charted previously, my O day *never* varied.

Some super duper long living swimmers from pre-ejaculate?

A combination of the two?

I was peeing on cheap ovulation sticks from CD 12-19 and there was no spike, so I assumed I was having a cycle where I did not ovulate. On CD 20 we DTD, using pull out which has served us well for years. Apparently I O'd on CD 24 or 25, which never happens to me. Then I end up with a + HPT. This after it took us 9 months of really trying to get pregnant with DS. I am still shocked 26 weeks later.
I was using FAM, we dtd (unprotected) 5 days before ovulation and dtd one other time pre ovulation with condom and maybe a couple more times with condoms following ovulation, I am assuming his 'boys' hung around for the 5 days.

He is getting re-snipped, I am ready to be done making babies, though we make pretty awesome ones

A little riskier over here but- we had successfully used the pull-out method for more than a year (and both had successfully done so for long periods of time in previous mongamous long-term relationships with no scares) and he (who was the SUPER careful one) looked at me and said "I just want to stay inside just this once..." and adoring loving me thinking ehh just one time, no way it's on a ovulation date.... and BFP! So we weren't super surprised but we were definitely still surprised! (and obviously we know that our story is the THE STORY told about why the pull-out method doesn't work in high school health class
).

On a more amusing note I didn't want to tell my mom about our choice of BC and how it contributed to her grandchild-to-be as I am 24 and was not engaged to DF at the time- so I tried to tell her the condom broke, she responded (and this is one of the moments when I realize why I love my mom so much) "or you just forgot to use a condom that time..." I was like darn... foiled again

With DS1 I was on ortho tricyclen lo and using it like clockwork and got preggers. Before I had been on regular ortho tricyclen for years with no scares....I switched to low dose birth control (trying to be nicer to my cardiovasc. system)and got pg twice. First was a miscarriage and I was also on antibiotics at the time (so I assumed it was the antibiotics making BCP ineffective). Second (DS1) I wasn't on anything by the BCP, took it everyday at the same time and this was MONTHS after the mc...low dose BCP just isn't enough to prevent my ovulations I guess...

This go round was stupid. We use condoms but usually not for the first few seconds, but two times that month--two days in a row a few days before my ovulation I guess (I've been all over the place)...my DH got overly excited I suppose and there was absolutely no condom usage. I was shocked when he did that but not sure why I was so surprised at the BFP

Erm... unprotected sex led to my getting pregnant.

I thought I had a good idea about my cycle, despite not charting. But apparently we DTD too close to my O date. When the morning came that I should have started my period, it wasn't there and I took my first test -- a very faint line said, "Hi!"

And the rest is history.

That's a similar story to how we started TTCing a few months earlier than planned, except we were using condoms. DH wanted to skip the condom once, just for a minute, but it ended up being... let's say "way longer" than a minute. LOL.

With #1: We'd been DTD for a year, unprotected, not pulling out or anything. I just thought I couldn't get pregnant (because I'd been in past monogomous relationships that we weren't too "careful" and never got PG).. then I got on the BCP just to supress my period on our honeymoon. I took it for just 2 weeks and it made me really sick so I stopped. I got pregnant on our honeymoon- but that ended up as a m/c. So.... after the m/c, we were being "careful" but then it was DH's B-day and I let him inside me that ONE time, and got PG. Apparently, according to my u/s early dating stuff his "boys" were hanging out in there for at least 5 days, if not more.

With this pregnancy.. I started charting as soon as my fertility returned. DH was always VERY careful, using condoms and pulling out, which worked the whole time... until ONE time we DTD, and it was a week and a half earlier than my expected O-day, so we thought we were in the clear to at least dtd without a condom, and then he "got caught up in the passion" and didnt pull out. So, here we are!
