"Safe" exercise?

DD is now 8weeks old, and I am feeling like a frump. I'm STILL in my maternity pants, and I swear I may have even gained weight in the last couple of weeks. UGH. I'm not used to this--the weight came right off with #1 and #2. I'm about 30lbs over my PP weight right now.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what, how, when to exercise. I will be walking #2 to and from preschool every day, but that is only a couple of blocks. I might have a walking buddy in a neighbor, but I'm not sure that will be enough.

I remember someone saying something about breastmilk, that exercise can change the taste? And the babe won't like it? I used to be a runner, and I would love to get back to it, but I won't do anything that could jeapordize my nursing relationship with my little one.

Oh, and I'm holding off on the yoga until my herneated disc starts to feel a little better... Deep bends are killer on the sciatica.

I excercise all the time and as far as I know, the taste of breastmilk hasn't changed (or at least it hasn't caused any problems.) I was back in a solid pre-pregnancy routine by 10 weeks post cesarean. I exercised all throughout my pregnancy though so that helped. I personally like swimming and now pilates.
I have read that losing weight too quickly can release toxins (from the fat you're losing) into breastmilk, so it is best to lose the weight slowly and steadily. I haven't heard about it changing the taste...

My dd is 7 months old and I'm about 10 pounds over my pp weight. I'm doing yoga and pilates dvds at home, walking some, and trying to eat right. It's frustrating to take it slow, but in the long run it is better for dd and the weight is slowly coming off.

Start slow and see how you feel. If all is well, amp it up. Make sure YOU drink plenty of water.

A friend's dd wouldn't nurse if mom was sweaty - too salty? - but would if mom ran a washcloth over her breast. My dd doesn't care!
I would recommend something like "Walk Away the Pounds", dvd that you can do in your home. It's something you can adjust to your comfort level.
I think it's safe for you to do any exercise you want to do. At 6 weeks pp I was running, doing situps etc. 3 times a week. I was fine with it. I lost all of my weight (55 lbs) in about 4 months. I guess it was hard for me not to exercise since the military makes me do it.

I've never seen anything about losing weight too fast causing toxins to be released into your body. Is there a reference on that?

I've heard this too. I read that you should shower after exercise before nursing to avoid problems.
Barring extreme circumstances, I think most docs give the all clear to do whatever you feel up to by 6 weeks. One thing to be mindful of though is if your ab muscles seperated, and if so, sit ups need to be modified. Otherwise, have at it!

DS doesn't like it when I was sweaty either, He'll make this bitter face, but then go right back to chowing down

I've heard of what you are taking about with the taste. What I have heard is that lactic acid is released when you exercise. But that is only if you overexert yourself. So I think that as long as you don't kill yourself running that you will be fine.

come on over to the running mama thread if you want! we are in the fitness and weight management forum. There are lots of us running with young babies and our babies seem to nurse just fine.
in fact, I'm practically attacked when I get back from running, and ds apparently is WAY into sweaty mama milk.
anyway, I started back at 6 weeks pp and it was maybe too soon, but then again I had a c/s. take it easy, try some jogging, and ITA with losing weight slowly, 1/2 lb to a pound a week or so. good luck!

Physiologically speaking, you don't have to overexert to create lactic acid. It's a natural byproduct of your body using up glucose & oxygen to create ATP (energy) to keep on truckin' once you pass the anaerobic stage of exertion (which is only about 30 seconds, so it doesn't take long). I think that worrying about it crossing the breastmilk barrier is pretty far-out, though, and an unnecessary fear.

Krizty -- I'm on Okinawa, too. Was ADAF until May (in CE) and my husband is still stationed at Kadena (in CE...).
