He makes the money... oy. Well, just tell him that you feel it's safer and they are going to last a very long time.

We love our NUK sippy. They make them for 6 months up, and then toddler ones too. for the 6m+ they make bottle teats to put on.

Our 12 month old uses the First Choice Learner "bottle" (more like a sippy) on this page
http://www.nuk.de/nuk2003/html/main....heiten&lang=en

But i think you would be interested in this one for your age:
http://www.nuk.de/nuk2003/html/main....heiten&lang=en

I wish I would have know you were looking for born free. I just sold a brand new one with shipping and new spouts for 10. I really don't care for the born free cups, just because they aren't leak proof. Only the soft spout is, but it doesn't last long with toddlers and the hard spouts the water just comes out if they lay it on the side... kind of strange for a sippy cup to me.

We adore our klean kanteens. I am the salvation army queen...I never spend money, but invested in one for my daughter. She uses it all the time. It is well worth the money.
