SAH Montessori moms, how many hours a day?

A question mostly for SAHMs: At what age did your child begin going full days (about 5.5 hours) and how long had they been in the program at at that time?

I just met with my Dd's "Guide," and she thinks that when Dd starts Montessori in a couple weeks, she should attend the full day so that she 1) Has more time for lessons in the afternoon when only the older kids are there 2) Has more time to bond with older kids and the Guide.

The Guide says that she would want her to stay the whole day program only if my Dd was comfortable with it, but 5.5 hours per day seems like a long time for a barely 5 year old. What are your experiences?

I think you would be surprised. My 20-month old spends 6 hours in day care every weekday (including a 1.5 to 2-hour nap). When I go to pick her up at 3PM, she does not want to leave.

In France, virtually all children are in full-time kindergarten at age 4, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and they all seem to do just fine. I see their parents pick them up in the afternoon, and the kids are coming out of the door of the school still full of energy.

I think that if she is still taking a nap, as some children even at that age do, then it is important that this somehow be maintained.

I would try it out for a few weeks and see what you think and not commit fully. Especially if you have the luxury of staying home, then you have more options regarding how long her day is for her personally. The school also told us that our daughter was ready for full day at four. We found that she was an emotional wreck by the day's end - sad, very tired and emotional, irritable. She's a sensitive kid though, and it was just "too much" for her. We put her back to half-day and she was normal again. She was more ready this last fall at age five almost six.
