Almost two weeks after I thought he'd be here (got what I deserved for assuming!!) Sawyer Geordi Mapp arrived Friday, November 23, one day before his due date. I had a shockingly fast labour, at least to me, since my first vaginal labour was approx 19 hours (DS #1 was a csec for breech - so #2 and #3 were successful VBACs thankfully) Here is Sawyer's story:

On Nov 23 at approximately 12:30 am I woke to a sharp pain. I thought "ouch, that might have been real!" Went to the washroom and back to bed though, cause really I didn't think it was labour yet. About 10 minutes later I felt another pain and as I sat up out of bed I felt a gush of fluid. Walked around my house for a short time in semi-denial, then turned on the computer and starting timing contrax. They were getting really painful right away and as I timed them I realized that although some were quite short, they were only 4-6 minutes apart at most and we needed to get a move on (I was at 3-4 cm dilated a week before this, so I figured this labour would be shorter than my first at least somewhat).

So I woke up DH and called my best friend. My best friend was to drive me to the hospital, 25 minutes away and DH was dropping off the boys with my sis (40 min) and meeting us at the hospital. DH left while I waited for my friend. I was at the hospital by about 2:15 am - the pains were about 3-4 minutes apart by then and really really hurting. I was asked if I wanted an epidural and I admit I was so panicked and hurting I said yes. Fortunately the nurse did the evaluation of me and when they checked my cervix I was already at 8cm, so they then said it was too late to bother with the epidural - so I was going natural as originally planned.

I had my friend call DH at this point and tell him he needed to hurry as things were going so quickly. I knew he'd be so upset to miss anything and I really needed his support. I laboured for a while in the shower and DH arrived. I started to feel kind of out of control at this point - my back hurt quite badly and the pains were right on top of one another - they checked me again as I was feeling pressure and at 3:50 am (only about 3.5 hours into labour) I was complete and ready to start pushing. It took me a fair amount of time to get a really good groove pushing - I was afraid of the pain and I kept saying I just wanted it over with. Finally though I pulled myself together and really worked at pushing strongly - at 5:13 am my third little boy was born. Sawyer weighed in at a whopping 9lbs 9oz and was 20.25 inches long - with a lovely 37 cm head (ouch!!!!) I had a second degree tear but otherwise everything went quite well.

We came home Saturday morning and we're trying to settle into a new routine. Sawyer is nursing very well and my milk came in yesterday and I'm definitely engorged, but that should resolve soon enough. My older boys are fascinated by their new brother and love to take turns holding and touching him. DH and I are totally in love with the newest little man (but I still think that I'm done after this!)
