Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates area???

419 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  PGTlatte
My husband is in the midst of deciding whether to accept a job or not in the Chicago area. The areas we've found we can afford are Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates. Does anyone know anything about these areas? Are they nice places to raise a family, are they safe areas, do they have good resources (library, park district, etc...), nice people?? ANYTHING at all you know please share (and quickly too!!)

Thanks so much!!

I live in Schaumburg, and it is a very nice area. Very well-to-do, lots of shopping and entertainment. Great park district, schools, etc. My only beef is that it is very commercial, but I guess that comes with the territory

LMK if you have any more detailed questions I can answer.

We have friends who live in Hoffman Estates for more than a decade and really like it. We often go in and visit them and we really enjoy the area. They both grew up on farms in Iowa so it's definitely a different life than they grew up with. We live in Iowa City so it's just a three hour drive to Chicago (at least to Hoffman Estates) so we go in several times a year. While I hate the traffic (but that's just par for the course) I'm sure I'd get used to it if I lived there. One of the things that I love about their area is all the green space that the Chicago area maintains. While there is a lot of "shopping" as dh and I refer to the strip mall feel of some of the areas (but what town doesn't have that nowadays) there are always lots of large forest preserves to bike/walk/blade or whatever.

I know I'm no expert, but we really like the area you're thinking of and I had to throw in my 2 cents.

We used to live in Hoffman Estates. It is very commercial and IMO crowded, lots of traffic. It is nice though and has low crime, good property values, and lots of shopping and restaurants available. The Hoffman Estates park district has a website:

Depending on where he would be commuting to, you may also want to check out the area a little west of Hoffman Estates, in the towns of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Cary, Carpentersville, West Dundee, Huntley, and Gilberts. We moved from Hoffman Estates to West Dundee 1.5 yrs ago. Our new house is 12 minutes from our old house and we got lots more house for our money. It's a little less crowded out here for now. It is quickly becoming very commercial though. There is a lot of commercial development in the area and there are a lot of new homes going up. In a few years, it will be crowded and commercial here too. It's probably a good time to move here while it's still affordable though.

I lived in the burb right next to hoffman called Palatine. It was cute but not me. We moved out of the burbs. It was to crowded and I would much rather live in Chicago if im going to deal with the crowds.
Another problem I had with this area is the "keeping up with the jones" type of mind set, Very consumer driven and not very eco friendly. Its also rather snobby imo. If your looking for a crunchy place to live I would not suggest it.
I actually started homeschooling my dd because of the affect the suburban public schools had on her. She was engulfed in everything I was totally against and it was changing her

I agree...I find the entire NW suburban area to be a pretty superficial, high-consumption place.
