I'm 25 weeks pregnant (tomorrow) and have been feeling my sciatica slowly coming back for weeks now. I had it when I was prego with DD and then off and on since then. I've been doing yoga to try to keep it at bay...

Yesterday it wasn't really bothering me, I was standing at the sink just washing a pan and my back spasmed. Sharp pain shot across my mid-lower back through to my butt...it was so painful and unexpected I let out a cry. I had a hard time getting around all day and was in a lot of pain (which was super miserable since it was my DD's 5th birthday party!).

It's still killing me.

I have a doctors appt. today, but she just tells me to swim. I don't drive, so even if i had the MONEY to pay to swim somewhere...i wouldn't have a way to get there.

Is there anything else I can do? I'm pretty miserable.

See a chiropractor. Try to find a woman if you can, I like those better, but about any chiropractor should be able to help you slide your spine back into place- which is what is causing the pain.

I suggest a visit with a chiro too if you can. And they should be able to teach you some exercises and stretches to do at home.

One thing that helped with my pain - leaning over a birth ball on my knees. Something about the weight of my stomach being able to hang seemed to help balance my pelvis out. I was at the point where I was really having a hard time walking, and doing this as often as I could really started to help in just a few days. That's just my experience, but maybe it will help you too.

Hope you find relief soon!

Oh mama, I had that with DD. I swam and it helped but this time I would probably try acupunture too.

it is about $40 a session but it clears up back pain quickly for me.

Hugs!

I would LOVE to go to the chiro...I went last time when i could barely walk and it helped so much after a few sessions...i only have state insurance though and it doesn't cover the chiro at all...so it's out as well. I think i will call though and see how much one session costs - one is better than nothing!

Chiro! Call them and see if they have a discounted fee for cash payment, etc. they should work with you. Are you sure your insurance doesn't cover the chiro? We ended up with state insurance during this pg and surprisingly, they cover 18 chiro visits a year for me, with no referral either. Call them and double check.

Compare the cost of joining the Y for a month (sometimes they'll let you try it free for a week - or private clubs will give free week passes, check that out too! Also, is there a college with a pool where you are? Sometimes they let community members use the pool for cheap (or sometimes free if they don't check any ID as you enter
) and chiropractic visits for a month... (you'll have to find some way to get to both places)

At my small college pretty much anyone could come in and swim for free, you're supposed to pay, but they never check any IDs.

I swam 2-3x a week and definitely helped my pain!!!! (I bet it would be cheaper than chiro too - with no possible bad side effects!!)

Sadly, chiropractic has been the only thing to help me with sciatica so far (I say "sadly" because it's expensive $$$). my midwife also suggested finding a licensed massage therapist who works with pregnant mamas. Some chiros and LMT's offer coupons for new clients or will work out a discount or flex-pay schedule if you are low-income or have no health insurance.
good luck! sciatic pain is AWFUL. i wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'm 28 weeks pregnant. At about 24 weeks, my sciatica pain was almost unbearable. I talked to my midwife, who basically said it was just going to get worse.

But then about two weeks later, it started to go away. I am not sure if this is because of some lifestyle changes I made, or if it is because things "shifted" in my belly, taking the pressure off that nerve.

Here are some things I've tried: a good walk most days, stretching at least once a day, changing to more comfortable shoes. Also, because of some construction going on at our house, I slept for a couple of weeks on a saggy spare mattress. Things did get better when I switched back to my regular bed. So you might consider if your sleeping arrangements could be improved.

I still feel a little pain, and I know it might come back, but I am definately feeling better. I'll hope the same for you!

Sorry nothing helped with my first but seeing a chiro. I am a dog groomer so my work is very physical. I stand and bend all day. I was in a lot of pain when I was pg with my ds. The chiro made work bearable.
