How do you keep your baby from scratching him/herself? I try to keep his nails clipped, but he still manages ot scrath up his face. Right now he has three little scratches, two on the side of his nose and one on his eyelid. Someone gave me little mittens at my shower, but then he can't play with anythign if his hands are covered. Is there anything I can do, or will he just outgrow this?

Actually, ITA with you, Lili. I took the "mits" off at about a week old, and just tried to keep dd's nails short. She scratched herself a few times, but never badly at all. I think they outgrow it, but now we're having the problem at 8.5 mo where she scratches *me*, lol! so basically I cut her nails about every other day. not the easiest solution but it worked for us too.
Peace.

It's hard to keep up with the growth of their nails. They grow so fast! Our lactation consultant gave us a great tip--we use cuticle scissors to trim ds's nail. The clippers never really worked for us. We found nice-quality cuticle scissors at a drugstore. They were made in Japan and a little smaller than regular cuticle trimmers.

Now that ds is more active, I usually cut his nails during naps. Sometimes we use the emery board to trim. First Years makes baby sized ones.

I always just trim G's nails while she's asleep. She will scratch herself or me if I don't get them clipped at least once a week.

My DD scratches herself (and me!) whether her nails are long, medium, or short-short-short. I spent the first few months feeling like I was also competing for "Horrible Mother of The Year", and then I resigned myself to it. I cut DD's nails about every other day, and use our baby-sized file to soften the edges. To help the scratches that show up despite my efforts, I put a few drops of breastmilk on each one, and they heal up very quickly. I'm noticing that she's scratching herself less all the time - Now the worst ones are on me, from her crazy pinching while nursing, but that's OK by me

About twice a week my usband holds DD hands and makes wolf noises to keep her distracted while I clip and file them. she only wore the mittens for the first week when I just couldn'tt figure out how to cut them and I was in so much pain that her scartching me was torture.

Ditto my guy. mittens were ridiculous. I am going to try the filing next!
