To make yogurt in an oven, you need to be able to maintain 110 degree temp for yogurt starters that require heat and 70-78 degree temp for the counter-top room/temperature cultures. Most ovens don't go down to 110 (a few do though). Sometimes you can get 70-80 by leaving just the oven light on.

Ok, we just installed a nused oven, so I'll have to check.

We're looking for a non-electric option, but I love your method.

You can set the jar on top of a nonelectric hot pack inside a big stock pot and stuff with towels - I've done that when I needed the oven to roast a chicken at the same time I had yogurt going. I did have to reheat the hot pack halfway through, but I think if you used something like a small insulated cooler instead of a stock pot, the heat would last longer.

I'm just having trouble thinking how you'd heat the hot pack itself without using any electricity. But I suppose if the power went out and I got a neck ache I'd be able to come up with something so I am sure there's a way!
