Anyone know of a Doula that doesn't charge too much.

I'm expecting my first child (May 31, 2008). I'm 28 weeks and live in Fredericksburg, VA. I'm considered high risk, since I'm going to be 41 next week and I had gastric bypass three years ago. I'm expecting a boy.
My first half of my pregnancy went very well. I had no sickness at all. In my 22nd week, I started having abdominal pain and wasn't able to eat well. I saw my Bariatric Doctor and he put me in the hospital. He ended up doing exploratory surgery and discovered I had a Peterson's hernia. The pregnancy ripped open my abdominal wall and my entire small bowel had looped through it. I was very fortunate. If I had waited another day, my bowel would have started to die off and both me and my baby would have died. Since the surgery, I've been having off and on bleeding and premature contractions. My OB checks my cervix every two weeks and I have a monthly ultrasound to check on my placenta. I've been feeling really well lately and I hope the rest of my pregnancy goes well.

i don't have a personal recommendation, but a couple of ideas of where you can start looking:

have you checked www.birthmattersva.org ? there isn't a local chapter for Fredericksburg, but there might be folks listed who serve that area.

here's the VA listings of DONA doulas, there are two in Fredericksburg: http://www.dona.org/search/results.p...=both&x=23&y=6

you might also want to call Birthcare in Alexandria. I know their practice travels pretty far south, close to Fredericksburg, so they might have a doula they work with who lives down that way that they could recommend.

HI.. VAdoula... are you close to Warrenton? I am looking for a Doula as well, that is trained in Hypnobirthing and am moving to Warrenton by next month and will be meeting doulas at that time. I'm due Nov. 9th... Is there also a Birthing Center that you recommend that's close to Warrenton or a lovely midwife? thanks

I'm in King George but you can come to meet several doulas and a midwife (Lori Orme) who I believe is in Warrenton at the Fredericksburg Childbirth Forum. This is a monthly meeting hosted by 4 doulas in the Fredericksburg area to anwers your questions about pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum topics. This month we are discussing "What does a doula do?" We also have free time to discuss any other topics you would like to learn more about. It is at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 1115 Caroline St. (downtown Fredericksburg) at 7:00pm. Come meet us!
