My husband has an interview for a job soon in Northampton. If he get this job, we'll be making the move to Western Mass from the Boston area. We've been desperate to get out of this giant concrete block and live in nature for a while, so that would be nice. But I've scoured craigslist and I just don't see all that many options. I know it's probably a bad time to go apartment hunting. We're flexible in location (and are even dreaming of as far north as beautiful shelburne falls) but we're a one car family and want to keep it that way.

Any tips on decent towns surrounding northampton that have reasonable public transportation into northampton? And how about a website with apartment listing in northampton? Are there any? What are good areas to look at? There's an apartment we might look at in deerfield that seems really nice. Any tips on what deerfield is like?

Thanks in advance!

My husband and I lived for three years in South Deerfield and loved it. It really was a winderful time in our lives. There is a little town center with library, pizza place, video store, maybe still a tiny grocery?, polish grocer, surrounded by a grid of residential streets. Walk one direction and you go to trails up Sugarloaf, walk the other and you end up out at Yankee Candle. There are bus stops to catch a bus back to UMASS/Five College transport. A mix of families and students, but really a quieter student population than you find in Amherst or the apartment complexes. There are also dentists, a bike shop, a frame store, really quite a few things, all within walking distance. And Yankee Candle, which is just a huge frightening place. There also used to be a pickle factory and depending on how the wind was blowing we would get either vinegar or artificial candle smells.

Deerfield proper is lots of farmland. Lovely but less townlike. I don't know the bus system through there but I am guessing it is less.

We eventually left our apartment to live in the woods but we still have lots of good memories of South Deerfield.

We've found many apartments by looking in the classifieds section of the Gazette newspaper. You can see them online too, but you have to subscribe: http://www.gazettenet.com/ Total bummer because it used to be free to read it online.

There are also rental agencies that you could call. Of course they do also charge a fee (usually equal to 1/2 month's rent or something like that). This is the one I've heard most about (friends have used it): http://www.robinsonre.com/all_listings.html You can also call them and tell them what you're looking for, and they'll keep their eyes out for you.

And keep checking craigslist since there are often new listings every day.

We have had luck with craigslist, the Gazette, and also the UMass Commuter Housing Resources office (you don't have to be a student). We love living in town in Northampton, but have also had fantasies about Ashfield or Shelburne Falls. Town life suits us, though, because it means so much less driving. In the spring/summer/early fall, we've been able to pretty much park the car, except for occasional trips to Hadley for shopping at Whole Foods /Trader Joe's.

We moved here from Cambridge about three years ago, and have never regretted it for a second!

Thanks for these helpful replies. Well, my husband got the job offer and we're moving to Northampton! I can't believe how nervous I am about this!

The few apartments that seemed reasonable on craigslist are already taken and I'm worried we're not going to find something decent by March 1st, hence we might be forced to take something much more expensive temporarily. We really want to be close to down town but also have a backyard, and ideally be on the edge of some woods. I know, we want it all! So I'm going to subscribe to the gazette just in case we're missing a whole lot.

I would love any more words of insights / encouragement about this upcoming move of ours. Thanks a whole bunch and I hope we can meet some cool people soon!

Our first attempt at finding apartments was a total failure. I know I have high standards of cleanliness and can't deal with with 'ickiness' but some places we saw were just gross!

There is on apartment that looks very promising, and it's on lake st in florence, off of bridge st. We haven't managed to see it yet. Does anyone have good things to say about this neighborhood? And furthermore, what is a really great neighborhood or two that we might focus our search in?

Thanks so much for all the helpful tips so far. I hope we get lucky soon!
