I am using ds1's old convertible for ds2 while visiting family. One of the hook things that keep the cover on has ripped off, so that the cover isn't secure on that part. It stays on it pretty well though. Is this a safety issue?

The seat will expire in 2010 sometime. I was hoping not to need to buy a new seat for visiting family right now, but of course I will if it will be safer.

It's the Evenflo Triumph (the old style).

Also, I am going to reread the instructions, but the seat doesn't seem reclined enough- any tips?

I'm assuming you meant convertible (rear facing of course), not booster?

As long as the cover isn't coming up, exposing the EPS foam (kids have ripped off pieces of the foam and then choked on them), and as long as the cover hasn't wrinkled and compromised the harness fit, it's not a safety issue, just an aesthetic one.

If the seat isn't sufficiently reclined in the mechanical 'recline' position, you can use a rolled towel or pool noodle in the bight of the vehicle seat to force the seat as reclined as forty-five degrees.
