Seattle nurse-in needed at KOMO

Can anyone organize it? I would love to but I am on modified bedrest for one more week. I think that Ken Schram really needs more education on NIP

http://www.komotv.com/stories/37268.htm I know there is another thread about him but I really think we need a nurse-in. There are soooo many nursing mothers in Seattle.

What do you say ladies?

I don't know that a nurse in would be the best tactic here. The anchor made it clear that she thinks this man is an idiot. It seems to me that crying "nurse in!" every time someone makes a stupid comment would take away from the impact of nurse-ins to protest systemic, constant discrimination.

He likened breastfeeding in public to urniating into a glass at a table..... sure he is stupid that is right.

But isn't nursing-in somewhere all about educating people? Not only him but the great majority of people who watch TV or read the paper? The young mothers who read what he says and feel embarrassed the next time she goes out in public because Ken said he has heard from "lots of women" who don't like NIP.

I think that we need to back up Kathi for putting him in his place.
While I'd be happy to attend a nurse-in, because I think Ken Schram is a freakin' idiot, I have to agree with annettemarie. My plan is to write a letter to KOMO-TV General Manager Dick Warsinske, cc'ing Ken Schram and Kathy Goertzen (the anchor who told Schram he's an idiot), suggesting that even though Schram's piece was "opinion", it might be wise to ensure that he's not spouting absolute ignorant nonsense before they put it on the air. I might also suggest that for a station that has a program supporting "Heathy Mothers, Happy Babies", airing a piece that bashes breastfeeding is at least a little hypocritical.

In this case, it's easy to provide feedback - LOTS of feedback - that's clear and sensible. Schram isn't going to "get" a nurse-in. He might "get" a clue if his bosses hear what a moron he is.
Well, I know Janice in Canada has shared info on not using nurse ins fro every little thing. Let me look around and see if I can find it.

Well then every comment could be a little thing. I guess I don't understand why choose to nurse in one place then not another. Why do them at all then?

I guess to me any comment is not a "little thing".
Lady Madonna~

Would you be willing to share your letter for a promom.org 3 min activist?

I think we should flood them with letters at least.
You are entitled to your opinion, and entitled to stage a nurse in. But it seems to me that this was a comment made by one ignorant person. Even his fellows at the TV station are distancing themselves from him. So unless you are going to go stage a protest at his house, setting up shop in from of the TV station seems counterproductive to me.
Annette, what do you think about staging a positive "Seattle moms nursing rally" at a Seattle park, for instance, and inviting Kathi Goertzen to thank her for standing up for us on the air? Too close to a nurse-in?
I think that would be awesome, Kristin. It would be phrasing it positively rather than negatively.
Here's what I am thinking. And anyone is free to disagree with me. We, as lactivists, are getting some really good press out of this. For once, we are not being portrayed as milk squirting exhibitionist zealots. I think if the NYCNI is used as a springboard for a billion little tiny protests every time some jackass makes a stupid comment, we will be losing ground. It gives "them" the opportunity to shake their heads and say, see, they're just a bunch of crazy militants. I think what Kristin described- a rally praising breastfeeding, and not even drawing more public attention to that dink's ravings- will take the cause a lot further. Especially with World Breastfeeding Week coming up!
I don't know, they are an ABC station.

Anyway, here is the link to promom in case someone would share their letter and then moms all over would be in support. http://promom.org/3min/index.htm

Incase someone hasn't heard of promom, they set up letter writing campains both positive and negative about breastfeeding. I just wrote a note to Ken before I thought of Promom.
I agree that a nursing mom's rally would be a great idea! If this is organized, Lacy & I will do our best to be there!

I really like that idea if its done properly. I'm in the Tacoma area and I'd be glad to help with anything if someone is going to start working on this. I think this idea would be way more effective in this situation than a 'nurse-in'. Great idea Kristin!

I think that's a fabulous idea! Especially if we can get some pro-breastfeeding literature to hand out or something to help raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

Why not tell Kathy to bring Ken, but not tell him what he's going to!!!
