I had my second visit with my midwife today. I love her .

14 weeks, 3 days, I think. I took the boys as my midwife asked me last time to bring them . She caught Isaac . Don't think I will bring them next time, lol. They were good, but Isaac kept wanting my attention while I was trying to talk to my midwife.

I decided no on the AFP. They said I could choose a level II sonogram at 18 weeks since Isaac was born with a heart defect. I failed miserably at getting my labwork done. I promised I would do it this week. I laughed and said, "With the first pregnancy, I did it the day I got the paperwork. With Isaac I did it within a week. With this baby, maybe it will get done before I deliver."

Now we are sitting down to watch Isaac's birth so the boys can see if Karen was really there, lol -- they have their doubts. Isaac said he didn't remember her being at his birth-day .

I mentioned the anxiety issues I have been having and she suggested removing myself from the anxiousness and trying to examine what exactly is going on inside. She suggested trying to follow it through and sequence the steps to try to cut some out in the future. I was glad she didn't think it was anything that needs meds, but she also said to let her know if they get better or worse.

We got to hear the baby's heartbeat again, and we know it is not twins! I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in a while and she was hugely pregnant! I said, "Wow, I didn't think it had been that long since I had seen you!" and she said, "I'm having twins -- we found out at 14 weeks." She had my same midwives but had to transfer to an OB.

Maybe no one has had second appointments yet? I am actually due Nov. 29...I go late, so I felt safer with December.

I had my 2nd appointment yesterday, and it was great.

Chose to ask for the doppler to hear the heartbeat. Very emotional.

I just got back from my second appointment. Wow, these people are great.

Everything is a-ok. I'm finally putting on weight. I think my body is in catch up mode after 12 weeks of weightloss. With DD I gained a pound a week from day 1, so it's weird being at 15 weeks and weighing only a few pounds more than when I got pregnant.

Once I'm feeling better they want me to keep track of everything I eat for a week. Ug. I hate doing stuff like that.

They got my records from my previous birth and prenatal care, but they didn't get any of the bloodwork results. Irk.

So, my pulse was 80. I'd been sitting on the couch for at least 20 minutes when they took my pulse. No caffeine today. Why was it so high?? My normal resting pulse is more like 50.

I had my second appt yesterday too. My bp was good (this is when I started having problems last time). The only thing was there was some glucose in my urine so she suggested I test my blood sugar more often at home (which I do already but need to be more diligent about!). Jevin comes with me and he loves her house, he plays and plays and doesnt want to go home. She had an assistant there that is training to be the midwife so they both measured me and compared what they got. The midwife got 15 cm and the assistant got 16 cm.

We had ours last week - everything was OK - had a quick sono and got to see the little bugger flying around like crazy - heratbeat, too! it was pretty cool - wish hubby coulda been there - but I brought some pics back to share...Met my actual midwife - though she was pretty brief and kinda hurried....didn't love that - but I didn't really have a ton of questions either. Had a craptacular pap and hated her going up there and poking around - it was super quick - but I am paranoid... Really wish we had a different birthing center around here.......this is a pretty clinical place - not really what I had in mind - but our choices are limited. At least she was cool with my choices about denying testing, etc - she didn't push anything on me - so that was good. I didn't feel any great connection to her or anything, though. Did/do you all really "click" with your midwives? Am I expecting too much?

My U/S last Monday was my 2nd appt. I don't see my midwife again until 7/23!
My pulse was 80, also. I guess it is because we are pumping so much more blood for our little ones. It is a little irritating, though.

i had my second appointment today! i haven't gained any weight and my midwife wants me to eat more-- i have no idea how i'm going to do that unless i eat in my sleep, seriously. i eat all.the.time. i'm upping my protein intake, so hopefully that will help.
we chose to try out the doppler because i've had this insane paranoia that i'm not REALLY pregnant and actually called the midwives in a panic a couple of weeks ago about that. however, immediatly upon the doppler being put on my belly, the heartbeat was perfectly clear. i had two miscarriages before my daughter, so i have a tendancy to worry. this pregnancy has really been very easy-- which is VERY nice.
my next appointment is on my birthday! yay!

Can I hop on this thread, even though I'm sort of behind?

I just had my first appointment. We had to keep rescheduling for various reasons. (I'm 13 weeks.) I spent 2 hours with the midwife and her assistant -- woah. (And my 2 year old was happy the whole time, double-woah.)

Everything seems fine. BP is good. My midwife doesn't use a Doppler routinely, so no heartbeat check. My uterus is large for dates, but I think it was last time, too.

I do really click with her, which is unusual for me ... I don't often click with people. So I feel really good about my choice this time.

Patchpixie,

I don't think you are asking to much to want to click with your midwife. If it doesn't get any better over the summer, think about another option.

Your trust and comfort that you project on her is very important in my opinion. Birth is such a primitive experience, that I hear that our intution will be razor sharp. Anyone we don't trust will inhibit dialation, etc.

Read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth for more about this to see if you should seek another route before the fall.

Good luck!!

I had my second appointment today. Kind of frustrating : I had to bring all three kids, ended up feeling a little rushed. Try peeing in a jar infront of a 6 yo boy! Pregnancy wise all looks good. I have only gained 1 lb, BP was 126/78 exceptional considering I have a history of hypertension, baby was hard to hear but we did get a quick listen to the heart before s/he swam away again. What was so frusrating was the wait with three kids in a small room for almost an hour between when the nurse brought us back and when the dr came in. The dr very thourghly went through all the blood work and us of the first appointment. Confirmed that my due date is to moved to 12/17 from 11/21 as my LMP suggests. I say yea-less pressure to deliver by a preset standard or risk induction. I was offered an us to see the baby since the heartrate was so hard to catch, but turned it down as the kids had enough. Aric, my son with an Autistic Spectrum disorder, was kind of freaked by the doppler, but did exceptionally well just hiding in the chair (as opposed to bolting!). He has really matured a lot this year.

Had my 2nd appt two days ago. We heard the baby's heartbeat which was totally awesome. Tested my urine for glucose (neg) and proteins (trace) which the MW was comfortable with. Did a pelvic (cuz I was due for one anyway and wanted to see what she was like with that) and Relic (my dh) sat in on it. It was a very good experience. She was chatty and considerate and careful. She was the first healthcare practitioner to ever ask me what size speculum I wanted. I didn't even KNOW they came in sizes.

Had my third appointment today. It was kind of one of those anticlimatic ones - nothing really new to report. All is well which is definately NOT non-news but you know...kind of in a coasting stage. I've gained about 8 pounds so far - all but 1 in the last month I did the same thing last time - gained a big chunk between 12-16 weeks. I really am just stating this since I have little else to report. I'm of the "listen to your body, eat what you're craving, gain what you will" mindset. Anyway, we did hear the heartbeat which is great of course. And my midwife is a little concerned about me going too early since I was GBS+ with Jake and had him at 37 weeks on the dot. So we just talked about that and how I should take it sort of easy in the end. I also have to have a consultation with the birth center's consulting OB next month which I am already totally on the defensive about but I know they have to play by some rules in order to be able to provide the wonderful service they provide to all the people they serve - so I'll go and dutifully answer his questions while trying to be nonconfrontational (Soctty says he's bracing himself for a blow up on my part...am I that outspoken about this birth thing?? )

Not much to report either. All is well and that is good. When listening to the heartbeat we also "heard" some movement which was really exciting and took me by surprise! Oh yeah and I'm wearing maternity clothes for the first time today...pants are getting a bit snug and uncomfortable to so caved - but my belly thanks me.

Take care,
Second appointment today. Saw the back up midwife. Heard the heartbeat on doppler. Rate was 160 bpm. My uterus is like an inch and a half above my belly button and fundal height is "appropriate". I've been in maternity clothes for two weeks. They were just sitting there from last time and I couldn't suffer any more.
