HI gals.

I am due with my second child in less than a week and I am passing the time by fixating on how her birth might be different from my first, not that I would want it to, but like I said I am pregnant out to here and doing anything to fill my days.

ANyone have any stories about how 2nd labors are unique? My midwife said they are generally faster -- generally. It also seems to me that a lot of times your water breaks earlier on with the second, but I can't tell if that's just too small a cross-section reporting it (the last 4 second-labor stories I heard included a surprise BOW rupture as the first real sign).

I sure could use the chit-chat -- I appreciate any input you ladies have. I need to fantasize

Blessings,
Hmmm, my second labor WAS different from my first, but I wouldn't say it was better or worse. I was in a better place and personal space, but the labor itself was unique in the following ways:

1) Shorter. I labored for 24 hours vs. 41 hours

2)Felt safer. I labored at home and could make as much noise as I wanted, which helped. I could get in and out of the tub at will and had candles and music.

3)Was completely drug free. With my first labor at transition the medfife got nervious and gave me Demerol to "help me". It made me loopy and disconnected from the experience. With my second, I was drug free and felt the joy and wonder of that very intense time in my labor. Of course, I also puked during transition, but I guess that can go with the territory

Well I'll share with you my experience. They go against both of you assumptions though!!

My first labor lasted 5 hrs start to finish with my water breaking around 6-7 centimeters. I also had Demerol at that time and it made me so fuzzy, I couldn't focus, I couldn't even open my eyes and pay attention to what was going on around me. I had a terrible time. IN my opinion it was due partly to drugs and partly because it was such a HARD and fast labor. It was tough. I also had a conventional OB and an episiotomy.

My second labor lasted 3 times as long at 14 hours start to finish. It was SOOOO much better/easier even though it was longer. I'd take 14 hours over 5 any day. However my water wasn't breaking and I was fully dialated and pushing. Finally the midwife broke my water and with the next contracttion DS droped down and the head was out, next push and I was done. I had a water birth that time with no drugs and it was by far much better, also low lights, soft music... It was awsome. I didn't tear either.
I didn't know labor and delovery could be so wonderful, I mean it!!

Good luck Amanda!! I'm with my third and wondering how this one will go??!!

Hello..
My second labour was 3 wks ago, tonight...Hard to believe.
It was VERY different, I was also in a very different headspace, had a homebirth, so was in my personal space. Had a birthing altar equipped with gifts from my blessingway, and had amazing labour support team! My dh, my mom and my sis.
Okay, so ultimitaly, here's the difference, for me:42hrs with Soleil, 21/2 hrs with Samson!!! Crazy eh???
I truly believe that with Soleil, I was too scared to let my body go, I was not prepared, I had two labour coaches, who had never given birth, and I was in a hospital, with an iv, monitor, and so forth....
This time, I had no drugs, I listened to Enya, while dh rubbed my back, my sister, who is a reflexologist, massaged my feet, and my mom had me concentrate on my fingers during my intense, back to back ctx...I never had a build up to labor this time, my water broke, which it didn't with Soleil, and bam, hard labour.
I didn't even push, Samson came out while my body pushed, without my knowing..which was quite bizarre for me!!!

I wish you amazing labour and birth. Only a week to go, beautiful!!!

Mine were both pretty textbook with the same ob and in the same hospital. First was 14 hours, my water broke at 12 1/2 hours and we went to the hospital then. When we got to the hospital I began transition and was given nubain (sucks -- didn't do anything but make me feel drunk for a few minutes) He was born an hour and 20 minutes after arriving at the hospital.

Second labor was 7 hours. This time I was positive for gbs and was supposed to be at the hospital 4 hours before birth. Six hours into labor (water still intact) I went to the hospital. I was dilated to 9 (much to my surprise -- labor hadn't been that bad at all -- I did do Bradley with this one which really helped) and my water was broken then. My ds2 was born exactly on hour after I arrived at the hospital.

Of all my many friends from my bfing support group the vast majority say that the second labor was sooooooooo much easier. I only have one friend who had a second labor that was much worse than the first and she had complications with that one. There are always exceptions, but your body really does seem to know how to do it the second time around.

Good luck, I'm hoping you are birthing right now.

I've heard "the first one's slow, the second fast and the third--unpredictable" Which is how it was for me so far....now I"m nervous about what "unpredictable" will mean for us!! LOL

DD was over 24 hours of labor

DS was maybe a half-hour active labor, 4 hours total from early labor on. Very quick.

Most people I know have quite the different second labor, usually much faster. But as you know, you never do really know. Good luck. I"m sure it'll be great!

indigo -- I read "Baby Catcher" and in there she talks a lot about the 1st being slow, 2ns being easy and 3rd being unpredictable. I tried not to hold onto that idea too much. I mean, it sounded rather negative when I was reading it. I'd choose to just ignore that if I were you. Afterall, if you tell yourself something enough times you begin to believe it. Maybe we should rewrite that saying and have it go -- "1st ..., 2nd... and the 3rd is just right!"

That said, this will be my 2nd so, I'll buy into 100% that the 2nd one will be easy!
