My son who just turned 2 has been self-weaning. He still likes to nurse in the morning, before afternoon nap, before bed at night, and anytime he wakes at night. (we do not co-sleep). He will happily skip the morning nursing time if there is something more interesting for him to do. The morning nursing time is usually the longest session of them all.

I have noticed that my last 3 menstrual cycles have been preceded by crazy PMS such that I am irritated beyond belief at most things. (I think menstration resumed 7 cycles ago) I am 39 and started menses at 16. In those 23 years, I have never, ever had PMS. I rarely had any clue my period was coming up until it arrived. Does this breastfeeding pattern have something to do with my crazy mood changes? In the recent PMS episodes, I feel totally devoid of concentration or patience.

My older son (now 4) suddenly stopped nursing at 20mo of age. I do not remember any mood changes in myself around that time (of course I was pregnant with #2 too).

I want to get this problem under control. Anyone know of any good books or resources on the matter? Thanks for any help !

Sounds hormonal - which could be related to breastfeeding or not. I hate to ask but any chance women in your family go through early menopause? You could see your doc and get some ideas/tests run to make sure your hormone and thyroid levels are where they should be.

Yes! That happened to me with my son after the menses returned. Like the two days before my period I was devil woman and I didn't want anyone bothering me, and my son would be especially cranky and needy (in response to me and/or temporary milk drop, which seemed to happen). The effects lessened as he nursed less, which lead me to believe it was associated with the higher hormone levels due to nursing. They did finally disappear entirely, but the memory of that intense... I don't know what to call it, insanity? ... has me really dreading the return of my cycle this time around!

I'm afraid I never did get a good explanation for it from anywhere (I'd be really interested if anyone had good info though!). But like I said, it slowed with the bfing.

Hope that helps! You're not the only one at least.
