Huh.
Color me surprised. NOT!

Immigration is going to be the gay marriage of the 2006 elections. Frankly, I'm looking forward to sitting back and watching the Republican party implode as the corporate interests battle the xenophobes to get their own policies put in place.

The things is, parties on both sides of the table know what works and what comprehensive immigration policy should include to be effective. My husband was involved with the task force that helped inform the McCain-Kennedy legislation and was surprised to see how much agreement there was in the room about what needed to happen. However, everyone also agreed that politics will prevent what should happen from becoming a reality.

ITA. I remember reading that in another thread.

Politics at work again. The two proposed bills (McCain-Kennedy & Martinez-Hagel/Frist) were actually quite similar in effect. It seems they're breaking down over how the citizenship track bit will be perceived (as amnesty, etc.). Ridiculous.
