I don't know if this is the proper forum for this question. My mom has been making a few diapers and I also want to learn. My mom says it would be a lot easier for her if she had a Serger. She has a plain old sewing machine for now. Anyway, where can you get a good quality serger for a decent price? We've seen them at a local fabric store for close to $1000 (serger/sewing machine combo). She definitely doesn't have that kind of money to spend. I'm very sewing stupid so I have no idea where to look or what brands are good.

Hi there,

I'm also in the market for a serger and according to the wonderful divas on the diaper sewing divas board, a second hand serger is a great way to go. Are there any sewing machine repair shops where you live? They often offer 2nd hand machines and sergers. That way, if anything goes wrong, you can always go back to the shop. Also, some shop attendants will show you how to work the serger...I'd stay away from buying second hand on Ebay or craigslist, unless the person offers to take the serger back if it doesn't work.

As for brands, I've been told Janome and Brother are good, and to stay away from Singer (though I couldn't tell you why exactly).

I love my Janome 634D. I purchased it for $349 shipped on eBay. It sews perfectly pretty much every time.

I have a Kenmore Serger from Sears for $199. So far so good, I haven't had any problems with it (other than learning how to thread the darn thing, but I think that's common to all sergers)
