So, my dd just turned 3 yesterday and I really love nursing her and know she's not ready to give it up either. My problem is that for the past week or so my nipples have been so sore. (There's no way I'm pg). On the right side the nipple is cracked almost all the way around and inside the crack is raw looking. I'm using lanolin, but it is sooo painful to nurse on that side. I'm finding myself limiting her nursing, which I hate doing. I don't know if her latch is different or what or even how to correct it if it is. I ask her to be gentle and not to let her teeth touch the nur, but I always see teeth marks after. The pain is on the nipple though, not where the teeth marks are. She's really sweet and will kiss the owie and promise to nur gentle Has this happened to anyone else, and if so what did you do about it?

If you are doing the Lansinoh and giving your nipples plenty of fresh air and it's still hurting and cracking I think that indicates another problem, like thrush. Is her tongue looking white-ish/yellow?

Here, I found this:

http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp
http://lactinv.com/tscreen.htm

Here's some info about healing cracked nipples.

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...lehealing.html

If it is thrush, a really good probiotic is Bio-K. You can get it at the refrigerated section of the Whole Foods supplements dept. Also, remind her to open wide to make sure you guys get the best latch possible.

Congrats on 3 years of nursing, btw! :

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it's thrush because we've had that before and while this is pretty painful, thrush was worse. I do have some gentian violet that we used for thrush, so I may give that a shot again; although I hate the purple staining

The more I think about it the more I'm thinking it's a bad latch, but I'm not sure why after 3 years her latch would change. This morning like a good 30 minutes after nursing I still had teeth marks on both sides. I'll try telling her to open wide and see if that helps at all.

My son gets a poor latch too... I also notice if I take hot showers that it dries out the skin on my nipples. Someone once asked me if perhaps I was dehydrated, or if my supply was low at the times when there was sore nipple pain. I think it could be low supply, and the high suction from my son.

I started drinking mother's milk tea again and that seemed to help, I try to keep soap off my nipples when I shower and keep them out of the hot water.

Anyways, don't know if your experience is similar but thought I would add my 2 cents.
