I want to make some shoes/slippers and the materials I want to use are fairly thin leather/suede with a rubber sole. The rubber is only about 1/4" thick. Any idea what kind of sewing machine I need? Is there somewhere that you know of that can sew one pair for me so that I can see if it will work before I purchase a machine? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

You'd probably want to be looking for a big industrial sewing machine like what upholsterers use. But I know that shoemaking machines are very different from standard machines, as it has a special free-arm & throat plate that can go right inside the shoe.
I've always wanted to try shoemaking, but I'm too afraid of my mom's upholstery machine to try it!

most good machines will sew leather with a leather needle and there are special needle for sewing rubber as well. I recommend getting something with all metal gears
